Can anyone please advise me on how Toyota would align the printing on the gear kob,My car is 2012 Avensis 1.8 tourer, and after coming undone ,it is now out of alignment I can hardly go back to the dealer with a trivial fault ,so wondered if a spot of thread lock would have been used. THANKS.

Are to saying the whole gear knob is out of align or has the top printed cap/chrome ring come off?

The knob itself just screws on until you cannot tighten any more and is aligned, if you go too far the top cap will pop off this will only refit one way with the stitching on the leather running from front to back of car .

Thanks Lee for your quick response, the knob itself just unscrewed. the gear shift is fine, when i tighten it up ,to a just tight setting, the printing .[gear pattern figures] are out alignment , trouble is i am always a bit careful not to strain things so do not ..go round again in case damage might be caused. ???

When you get to "just tight" keep going until it aligns, the worst that could happen is the top cap will lift up, if that happens just undo and push the cap back down.

One option would be to use a small amount of plumber's thread tape on the shaft.
