Viewing Auris Tspirit Hsd - Things To Check?

Hi All,

Wasn't sure if best to post here or Auris Club. Fingers crossed you guys will have some suggestions.

Been trolling through some of topics on here to see if there is anything I should consider when I go to view a 2011 Auris T-Spirit HSD this weekend. I have previously driven the 13 plate demo model last year and really liked the car but couldn't justify the 20K price tag for what is essentially going to be a second car.

The car has 60k on the clock and being sold through a Toyota franchise in Bristol. So, are they any particulars I should ask about? Recall work done, replacement parts done/require around this distance etc?

Also my main journeys will be the daily commute to and from work which is about 5 miles each way through town and main roads. Is the Auris Hybrid suitable or should I be looking at petrol cars for retaining decent MPG.

Thanks In Advance

Hello James - welcome to Toyota Owners Club.

Presumably the car is the one at Motorline for £9995. Toyota have a recall checker on their website, where you can check if there are any outstanding recalls due on a vehicle providing you have the regn - http://www.toyota.co.uk/owners-info/recall-checker

I've run a check on WR11 OLP, and there is no recall work due on this Auris.

Servicing is every 12 months or 10,000 miles - whichever occurs first. So on this Auris, servicing should have been done on the mileage - ie every 10,000 miles - with Intermediate services due at 10,000, 30,000 and 50,000, and Full at 20,000, 40,000, and 60,000.

So the car is due to have it's 60,000 mile Full service.

Most Toyota dealers offer the Fixed Price Servicing scheme - see: http://www.toyota.co.uk/service-and-maintenance/car-servicing

You can see what should be done for each service by clicking on 'Compare Servicing Info'.

Check the service history to ensure that servicing has been done as above. If any of the mileage-based services have been missed, or if the servicing has been done on the age-basis rather than the mileage basis, the remainder of the Toyota new car warranty (5 years/100,000 miles) may be void. But if the remainder of the new car warranty is void, it may come with a Toyota Approved Used warranty (usually one year).

Presume the car hasn't had the 60,000 mile service done, so, as it is due, if you will want the car, and the service history/warranty checks out, you will want that service carried out before you take delivery.

How long does the 5 miles take?

With the Toyota hybrid, it takes a while for everything to reach running temperature. During this time, the petrol engine is pretty much on all the time so your mpg will not be that different to a normal petrol car. In winter, the warm up period is a lot longer than in the summer.

Wow frosty that was some impressive sleuthing to find the exact car I'm going to see. I'll make sure to ask about the service history and ensure it's up to date.

Jo the commute takes roughly 15 mins or so with bit nearest the house being a nice steady 40 and 50 stretch. If I'm no worse off on these journeys compared to a standard petrol ill prob still go for the hybrid as it will be nice to have for the weekend travel to the in-laws and shops etc.

Just make sure they haven't stuck cheap tyres on for a sale. The hybrids really need low rolling resistance tyres to get the best economy and no, they're not much more expensive and often the same as 'normal' branded tyres.

The original Auris HSD is a great car with marmite looks. But is great value for money and a great step into hybrid ownership. The comment about a small run is almost there. I used to commute 4 miles each way in 30 mph town traffic and would get 50 mpg in winter and 60 in summer. The heater is what kills the range as it causes the engine to run. In the other 6 months of the year the engine will switch off much earlier allowing savings.

You might get similar mpg's out of a small diesel but it won't be automatic, unlikely to have £0 road tax and certainly won't be quiet and serine thats for sure. Once you've sat in slow crawling traffic in total silence you'll never want to go back to diesel.

Couldn't agree more - actually, I made an expensive mistake and found I didn't even want to go back to an 'ordinary' petrol car!

After I sold my previous Prius I bought a 1.33 T-Spirit Yaris with 6 speed multimode transmission. If I'd never owned a Hybrid it would probably been (almost) the perfect car for my current circumstances, but having done over ¼ million miles in Hybrids since 2002, I couldn't live with it and in just over a year lost nearly 50% of its value!

Still, I'm VERY happy with my Gen 3 Prius...

My auris thrives on shorter journeys I do. 4 mile commute to work, as said in winter it doesn't go on to electric until warm so doesn't do as well mpg wise, but I usually see 60mpg +, I didn't go for diesel as the dpf problems with doing short journeys all the time so the auris was ideal,
