Brand is very much a personal choice, and you may get various recommendations.

Just make sure it meets the specs outlined in the following: http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/148358-engine-oil/

As you haven't stated what year the Avensis is, 5W-30 meeting API SL or SM seems the most appropriate.

If your car has an Optimal Drive engine, you should consider either 0W-20 or 5W-30

In Turkey Toyota service use Castrol 5W-30 for Avensis T270 (2009 - ...) 1.6 and 1.8 petrol engine. But I think oil brand choose is yours. To me not really big difference with other brands.

If you're asking this question because you're engine is consuming a lot of oil (which most 1.8VVTi's do of a certain vintage) then I'd buy the cheapest stuff you can that meets spec.

This is what I did, as my car needed topping up every week (I do 700 miles a week).

It was still going wonderfully when I sold it last year. This was a mix of Tesco semi-synth and whatever EuroCarParts had on offer.
