Starter Motor Replacement 2.2 Version

A work mate asked me as asked me to change his starter motor I have had a quick look it looks well hidden as aynone changed one do I have to remove inlet manifold etc, I don't want to offer to help and end up struggling it's a 2006 2.2 diesel XT3 version I suspect his solenoid is well past it, I was hoping I could change this while still in the vehicle looks possible but he wants a full starter change

The starter motor can be removed without dismantling anything - though it is a bit fiddly to withdraw. The repair kit (consisting of new contacts and plunger) for the solenoid on this motor is cheap and very simple to fit.

thanks for thr reply the owner of the Rav4 tried to get the top bolts free but can't get on it, I have tried to get a repair kit for this model of motor but at present can't find one but I think I can drop the solenoid off without removing the motor

Try www.repairkitsuk.com - they have solenoid repair kits for every conceivable Denso starter motor! They also list on eBay.

I had already tried everyone for a kit there is not one for the 2.2 version of the Rav4 it's a sealed solenoid, I have not had the chance to look at the Rav 4 yet but he says the top bolts is not possible to get on as anyone change a motor on the 2.2 version without dropping the inlet manifold etc

Fitted a new starter today for my mate??? I now know why he could not un-due the top bolt, the motor has one threaded hole and the bolt goes though the bell housing from the what would be the wrong side, and it was a pig to lift out but it turns over like billy whizz now, he got a replacement starter from eBay item number

I think it was £80 delivered with no exchange surcharge great price and I can say it was a great product

Had a chance to look at the old motor and it's not faulty the earth brushes connect to earth via a brush cage and the back cover which is bolted to the starter body the two large torque screws were loose, I just nipped them up and it's working perfectly they were very loose, if anyone is struggling with a slow turn over you can check the two screws from underneath after removing the plastic engine cover

Hi,

I'm in the process of attempting to test/remove the starter motor from my wife's car as it has a lazy turn over and changing the Battery etc hasn't helped. So far I've removed the splash guard from underneath, the Battery, and the egr valve.

I can see the unit, but have no idea how to test it before removing it (earth contacts etc), or even how to remove the connector etc..

Can you help? :D

An idiot guide on testing and removal would be really helpful if you have the time?
