Chequer plate would look great I reckon, although carpet does (as previously mentioned) have the big advantage of covering up any imperfections in the box consturction.

a friend of mine used a suade for his boot install. rather expensive, but looked really really cool! get a matching suade to your paint job! or something to contrast with it! :)
