Dead Head Gasket

ok... the garage said they are 99.9% certain that the head gasket is dead.

So.......

What is involved to get this bugger sorted out then ?

TRD Head Gasket : £120

( how do you know if 1.2mm, or 1.4mm ? )

ARP Cylinder Head Stud Kit : £95

People have mentioned getting the head skimmed... is this defo 100% required ?

How much would a good garage charge to do the work ? I'm getting a quote from toyota so I can laugh... but have no intentions of getting them to do it.

The parts are cheap enough, but labour wise I think it will cost a whack !

I'm pretty sure Mr T charge £900+VAT..... and thats just for labour.

Get a corsa jim, there much cheaper in the long run!

jim that site i'm gettin a quote for the quickshift from has the headgasket for just about £70, thats converted from $'s, then had the tax, + vat calculated on top of that.

then again its just over £50 here...

http://www.partznet.com/toyota/mr2/TRD%20P...headgasket.html

how expensive r parts in the soddin UK!!!

i wouldnt have thought that u'd need to know the size of the headgasket unless u were going for a stock one, cos the TRD one's a diff size neway isnt it?

here's something intersting tho...

http://www.alltrac.net/tuning/engine.html

go rite to the bottom where the TRD bit is...

"Note: It has been discovered that the TRD Metal head gasket is merely a 94 and up 3sgte metal gasket. So if you can find the OE toyota gasket for less go ahead and buy that. They generally run $50 or so. We are currently looking for the OE part number."

hmmm <_<

head skim not always req depends on if the head is warped (garage should check this).

i would be tempted to go for a hks gasket or simular. the thinner the gasket the higher the compression (good for torque and off boost driving) but you may not be able to run very high boost without det.

Though a head shim is indeed not always required, you need someone to look at it with enough knowledge to ascertain whether or not it is needed. If it does need skimming and isn't done, your new gasket will leak, and you'll have to go through the whole process all over again...

I'm still not convinced it's the head gasket tho.... my car has been fine all night etc.

I'll get another garage to look at it this week.

so...

which gasket better to get ? A thinner one over a thicker one ?

1.0mm or 1.6mm HKS ... which would be better ?

well if you have a skim, you'll need thicker than standard to keep compression stock.

If you want to run more boost get a thick one to lower compression.

If you want to improve off boost power, then go thinner as compression ratio will be raised.

I always thought with turbos it was better to go a bit thicker so you can run more boost.

Sell your turbo and get a n/a if you want to drive around off boost

especially because of future mods a thicker one seems to make more sense then. Am I right ?

yep u'll want a thicker one mate.

i reckon thats where the 1.2 & 1.4 mm differences came from. the rev1&2's prolly used the thinner one, and the l8r rev's used the thicker one cos they ran more boost.

just for your info the rolla was running JE forgies (higher compresion than std piston) and a 1.2mm HKS HG and still ran 1.7bar boos with no det so id go for the 1.2 it will improve spool up etc
