that depends on your point of view....

I would suggest it was at least a MK3 :-)

model codes:

TA20 and TA21 were from 1970 - 1973 (fuel filler cap in a flip down position in the middle of the rear bumper)

TA22 was 1973 - 75 (fuel cap moved for US laws to pillar)

TA23/RA23 (longer wheel base = major revision = different car, also had square indicators as opposed to angled ones of the earlier) 1975

RA25,27,28 and 29 where the different generations of the fast back model from 1975 to 1977 - or 8?

TA40/RA40 were from 1979 (think) to early 80's

this is where my knowledge runs short. The early 40 serries had round headlights, but the later ones had square.

Then we go into the TA/RA60's and 64's??? and onwards. Also think this was when the changed them to FWD, but again unsure of this fact :-)

Engines on the early TA20's was the 8-RC

Then the TA22's had 2T, 2T-B, 2T-G, Then the emision controlled 2TG's like R, GEU etc. This engine serries also applies to all TA23 upto, and including, TA40

the RA23's had the 18R serries engines ie. 18R-C, 18RG, 18R-GUE. This serries of engines apply in the RA serries cars up to, and including, the 40's

Thats my bit of history, and rant, to all referances of MK 1, MK 2 etc. to me its like calling a granny smith's a cox's errrrrr bad referance

and so the fountain of all celica knoweldge speak's.....

you should get a proper document together for the site, would be good to have a history of all the common and not so common toyota models ;)

I know of someone whos allready done that, if i ask him, could we stick it as a link for all to see? Is their a links section, it would make my life easier!

Nice try Carl, but you really don't want to get involved in Celica model codes - its a nightmare.

European 'Flatlight' Celicas were 22s as well, with 20s unique to the US. There were TA28s in Europe but never officially in the UK.....There were RA23 Coupes, but only in Japan, the UK and Denmark with all 300 or so UK cars as Autos.

T/RA25/27 were the same overall dimensions as later 28s and 29s but based on the 22 floorpan, so they had the same wheelbase as a 22. Everything forward of the windscreen on the 28/23 was unique to those models, but from the screen back, a 22 is the same as a 23........

So that makes at least 1.35 generations, before you even think of 40s and 60s..

Fortunately Wayne Stephenson is Aus has compiled the most accurate tables on the net and he can be reached through the Classic Celica Group on Yahoo Groups.
