Steering Rack Change On A 2004 2.0 D4D

Hello guys been quite a while since I've been on here been busy in overseas . The problem I got is my steering rack has a bit of play in it and now it's driving me mad is it a job I can do on my drive or is is the rack change a garage job many thanks

Hello Aaron and welcome back,

are you 100% sure it's the rack as the universal joints in the column usually wear first, anyway check out these .pdf's I have attached for you, especially the fault finding chart.

Thanks Pete yes it's Defo the rack a garage looked at it today for me because I thought I had worn inner tie rods but he told me the worst news and even showed me the movement it don't have play when the wheels are forward facing only got play when there's lock on could this be done without having to suspend the engine or remove the subframe

I've looked at the car and I think I could get the steering rack out of the drivers side wheel arch if I unbolt the anti roll bar assembly to make enuf room to pull the steering rack through
