2009 Avensis Tr Radio/cd Malfunction

The radio/cd player in my Avensis is playing up intermittently. When I switch on the radio the display fails to show anything but will play and when I insert a cd this also plays but when I switch from cd to radio via the selector buttons cd ejects. The radio will play after ejection but with still no display. It did this a couple of weeks back but then seemed to cure itself but I've just been out in it and the problem has returned. Anyone else had this problem?

I have 2010 T270 Mk3 Avensis 1.6. Bought in Sept. 2009. I experienced a cd display fail exactly like you.

Eject cds, sometimes display show nothing sometimes show like this '^%+&/(/&)****(/+%/ :) And sometimes it cures itself and works properly, like nothing happened before. In my experience display fail mostly occurred on hot days. By the way this cd fail occurred between April - September 2012.

I took the car to the service and told what happened and showed it, they told me, yes we know the problem, in somecars it may happen, we will change your cd player with working new one. But in our stock, there is no cd player, you may have to wait 7 days. I said ok and left the Toyota service. Then 5 days later they called me and invite me to the service. Nearly it took 35 minutes for changing it with new cd player and they washed my car for sorry from the problem.

But remember I am in Turkey, not in UK. By the way before went to service , I searched the probleminternet and I found a guy from Germany experienced same problem before.

It is a known problem with this radio, and it the front face of the radio that is at fault.

Any radios the dealers are fitting are more than likely recons.

Either way any competent radio repair workshop should be able to repair if you car is out of warranty.

A workshop i worked in (but still keep in touch) is charging approx €80 for the repair and has a mountain of them from the local main dealers.

Quite similar to the whole fm radio reception loss on previous models (yaris/corolla/avensis) that toyota never admitted to.

Thanks to all who have replied. In my case the display is blank and sometimes cures itself but it does appear to occur when the interior temperature is hot. Will try to get to dealers when it next occurs. It happened as I was going out the other day but came back when I rapped the fascia with my knuckles - impact technology still works sometmes!

Update to my problem, I called at my local Toyota agents service centre and explained the problem to them. Whilst sympathetic to the problem they said they were unable to fix the problem as it was out of warranty and they would charge around £200 to fix it. I said this was unacceptable and would contact Toyota direct and he said I might have more success that way. I have emailed customer services and will let you know how I get on in due course.

Thanks to all who have replied to my problem.

Update on the problem. Toyota customer relations were excellent, they arranged an assessment at the local dealers which confirmed the problem, reported back to customer relations who sanctioned a replacement free of charge. I bought the car in November last year with a 12 month warranty which Toyota have honoured - full marks to Toyota customer relations for their prompt solution to my problem.
