Hi Roy and welcome aboard to your new club,be great if your friend could see his way to joining us also

"White smoke" is usually caused by water entering the combustion chambers which often points to head gasket failure. This will cause low compression and lack of power so your feelings would seem to be spot on.

Other members who are more up to date will be able to help you more and no doubt good advice will follow.

All the best to you and your friend with this and please keep us informed of your progress on the matter.

Yep I would say Del is spot on, the 2.4d can have a habit of blowing head gaskets

It'll be a cracked head I'm affraid, diesel Surfs never blow head gaskets it's always the head.

Mine did the same, white smoke etc. never got hot and ran ok. Turned out to be cracked head. While it was apart the garage cleaned up injectors etc. it all began with her not starting straight away, no white smoke at that point, but soon down hill. Good luck.
