2002 Rav4 Diesel Fault Code Reading

My car is suffering from a lack of performance intermittently ,no acceleration and when running at speed on the main roads the engine warning light comes on,but clears when the ignition is switched off.

I bought an obd fault Code reader which claimed to test nearly every car but not mine.

Looking through the internet I found that my car required a vci cable and software for Toyota's unique system .I purchased the lead but could not get the programme to work so sent it back.

Any help or advice anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

Cheap U480 code reader works fine on my 2002 d4d, so should work on yours.

hope this helps

I thought the code readers only worked on OBD2 equipped facelift models from about 2004 onwards?

I tried an obdll reader but couldn't get it to connect to the car so I bought the vci cable which the manufacturer now says only works on petrol models

You can see why I am so confused ,I may just give in and get ripped off by the local

Toyota dealer just to find out what's wrong.

Thanks for the replies but I need a definitive answer soon .

OBD2 was a requirement from 2001 on petrols and 2004 diesels. However some manufacturers complied before the required date and there are 2003 Rav diesels which are compliant. If one owner with a 2002 car has an OBD2 socket and another hasn't then it sounds as if Toyota introduced the change on diesels in 2002
