06 Hatchback Jerky Takeoff In 1St Gear Only

my 06 yaris is a hatchback manual tranny japanese spec. It idles and revs fine and smooth and runs without any problems.

However in 1st gear when the car is going slow there is a jerky acceleration.

Even if i try to hold it at slow speeds in 1st gear it will *****. If i increase the revs then 1st gear will smooth out.

All other gears are smooth.

What could it be?

I was thinking maybe my fuel injectors or throttle body...

Please give your advice, thanks.

Hi Edeher721,

How long have you owned the yaris and has it only just started doing the jerky action?

Yaris ' usually are a bit jerky in 1st gear anyway just down to the gearbox and engine ratio in 1st gear being very short.

Hope this helps

It sounds like a normal 1st gear for this type of car.

Does it do this when you're just lightly on and off throttle by the way?

I drove a semi auto 09 Yaris before and that used to be jerky in 1st gear too. I used to override it and make it go straight into 2nd gear on level and down hill starts to avoid this problem. Interestingly enough my brand new 2014 Aygo doesn't have a jerky action in 1st gear if trundling along in slow traffic and its only got a 1 litre engine compared to the yaris 1.4

When I've experienced this on my Mk1, one time it was most evident during cold weather and was down to the clutch starting to wear out.

The other time it was due to the throttle body/EGR channel being blocked up with soot which would cause the valve to kick, sometimes quite violently, and cause the engine to surge.

This second one will only apply if yours is a diesel tho'.

Change spark plugs, had the same problem with a VW Golf (**** car) in gear 1.
