Check Engine Light On 2009 1.4 D-4D

As per title this appeared out of nowhere during normal driving tonight. There doesn't appear to be any funny noises etc coming from the engine so I drove home. At home I tried disconnecting the Battery for 20 minutes but upon reconnecting the light reappeared instantly at start up and did not go out as it normally should.

Has anyone experienced anything like this on their Auris, common faults for throwing the light etc? Or am I going to have to invest in a fault code reader.

Many thanks guys.

Yea seen that topic mate, Only thing that it could be coming out of that topic is a clogged egr but not everyone had that problem. The car only has 58k on it, seems a little low for a clogged egr at that mileage.

Go onto eBay and purchase a OBD/2 code reader, £8-£12 16 PIN and then put it in. I have never ever seen a Toyota with a check engine light but anyway the code reader will do save you £40+ by purchasing it for £12. Mechanics charge you £50 independent dealer and £120 for main dealer, take your pick. If the code is not having a affect on driving, its most likely to be something minor, nothing to worry about. Things such as fuel cap is worn out or something.

It appears the light has gone back out after 50 miles of driving. Don't know if disconnecting the Battery contributed to this or not. Probably not as it didn't go out after the original disconnection of the Battery. Anyway will post back if the problem comes back and I have to tackle it. Thanks for the replies people.

Alright, reseting the Battery makes no difference, only clear it for a bit. If there is a fault it will re-appear but if not, the light will disappear. If it comes back on then its a petty fault which to be honest don't bother wasting money getting it diagnosed. Best option again is to buy the machine off eBay.

Yea you are right. Although I don't know if it was the disconnection of the Battery that knocked it off as it was 50 miles after i reconnected it that it went off.

Can you turn off such lights with that reader you are referring to?

Yup, i have one. Simple to use, all you do is click ''scan'', it will tell you what fault is, if there is any and then theres option to 'clear' codes, i rate this machine 10/10!

Lol & wiz201

I used to have a Yaris that had a phantom check engine management light, no idea why it would come on but it decided to go on and off by itself.

If you disconnect the Battery it will turn it out as it resets the ecus. if it just a has cleared it's possibly something wrong ... But if it comes back on go to a decent garage not a dealer and they will tell you the fault if you do all the legwork a lot of them charge as they clear it then drive for about 5 mins so it comes on then see the actual fault but if you go up there with a reset ecu already they won't charge but that's at a decent garage not some shady looking place on a backstreet ... Mine came on i disconnected the Battery and reconnected and 24000 miles later still no light back on
