Hi all need to pick all the members brains I have a 04 Toyota avensis 1.8 t3x petrol brought from westland toyota hereford, which consumes huge amounts of fuel and oil took it to the Toyota dealership where I brought it from upon there request to investigate. after which I was told the problem was due to the piston rings oil has been seeping into the combustion chamber and shot out through the exhaust system, triggering a ecu light choking the cat I was told that to fix it would need a new short block and piston rings, thought great problem and solution found so can you fix it? They informed me the car is ten years old no work will be done by Toyota.

I protested car was sold with a known fault Prior to purchase i have to be honest I know very little about motor mechanics, there wasn't an oil silk I park in the same spot not a drop on the ground so had nothing to take to dealer during warranty. didn't know that this is a known fault with this engine type and year till a mechanic friend found out via Internet brought car in good faith from I thought a reputable main dealer, this is not what expected from sub hundred thousand mile car indeed when I brought it was 57000 miles.

if anyone has had similar experience and had fixes done by Toyota please post a reply there is journalistic interest.

thank you

Welcome Mo.

There are a few issues here.

The first is that unless you do a research on the model of car you are buying, you will not be aware. I helped my brother get a couple of cars and looked at the forums and Honest John for known issues.

You bought the car from a Toyota dealership, who may or may not have been aware that the car was burning oil. It depends on what records it has on the car. If you could contact the previous owner of the car, they probably know.

You need to contact trading standards to find out where you stand, if you have not done so already.

By now you may have searched the forum and read about the oil burning issues of the 1.8 vvti engines between 2000 to 2006. A simple Google search will give you all the answers, and most likely pointed you to this forum.

The short block and piston swap is the only cure, as the bores are made of special metal and Toyota advised that it cannot be re-bored. The only other option is to get an engine from a breakers, that is known to be healthy or has had the short block exchange. This is very hard to verify.

It sound like you have gone to 'Get Dom' or something similar if there is 'journalistic interest'!

I own an older Avensis with the trusty lean-burn 7A-FE engine, which Toyota replaced with the 1ZZ vvti engine. Not all vvti engines get the oil burning problem, but I have not found any statistic on how many cars are affected to those not affected.

You are not the first to join the forum and probably not the last with this problem. Keep updating.

Konrad

How long is it since you bought the car and how much did you pay. These points are relevant to how you can pursue any claim against the garage who sold it to you. If it is a recent purchase then you will have a possible reason to get them to fix it or refund your money. If however it is say six months or more then there is unlikely to be much you can do unless you can prove they knew there was a problem when they sold it to you. Definitely consult Trading Standards who can at least point you in the right direction.

Anything the 1.8 vvti was fitted to up until the engine internals were re-designed around mid 05 ish can be prone to this problem. There are lots of problem-free cars out there too tho.

How long ago did you purchase the car, what mileage have you covered and what warranty was provided with the car?
