T Sport Cuts Out Runs Lumpy On Low Revs

Hi, I have recently purchased a celica t sport 03 reg, today i used lift and afterwards could hear a strange ticking sound on neutral acceleration, upon changing down to 2nd gear the engine cut out, eventully i got it running again but very lumpy, so drove it back as i was on the road i live. After leaving to cool down tried starting it, took around 5 mins before it finally fired up and again very lumpy, yet if revs are taken above 3000 smooths out a little but around 2000 revs really wants to cut out and does so immediatly when foot off accelerator, any ideas anyone please?

There's likely to be two faults.

(i) clean the MAF sensor on the airbox box. Don't touch it. I used meths on a cotton bud.

(ii) The idle control valve will be gummed up. All you need is carb cleaner and spray around the voids next to the butterfly (once you've removed the hose from the throttle body)

There's a full description of both of these procedures on Celica Talk or Celica Hobby.

Your air filter will probably need changing too.

The ticking could be a variety of things. I would be checking the lift flange bolts and also the lift oil control valve filter.

thanks gazza, bit of an update, under low revs (<3000) heavy metal squeeking was heard, i have let the engine cool down since and started it without any problem, the revs were idling without cutting out but that heavy metal sqeaking is heard, sounds really bad, i quickly popped the bonnet and it definately sounded like it was an internal part of the engine making this worrying sound?

lift flange bolts? would these be the bolts i've heard of as lift bolts(the ones that break?), cheers Ben

The drive (auxiliary) belt may need replacing. There's a video on YouTube with before and after sound clips - the noise is quite metallic.

Yes the lift bolts on the pre-facelift models fractured but they've since been modified.
