Gear / Clutch Issue (I Think)? Anyone Able To Assist?

Hi guys,

Just joined this forum after finding myself browsing it quite alot. :)

I have a 2002 model Yaris 1L 5dr which was an ex-instructor's car. I bought it around mid 2012 and have been doing roughly 10 miles a day in it which isn't to heavy. Need it for A to B at the moment.

Last week the car has been feeling very weird and I can't work out what the issue may be. I don't want to take it to the garage as they charge me for general checkups (sucks, I know!).

I can appreciate that the car is worn out due to it's use as an learner's car but I need to fix the problem with it (and also increase my technical knowledge).

Alright so normally here's how my smooth gear shifts go (with each gear change being at 2500rpm):

1st Gear: 0-8 mph

2nd Gear: 9-15 mph

3rd Gear: 16-25 mph

4th Gear: 26-35 mph

5th Gear: 40+ mph

But this past week, the above 2nd values per gear seem to be correct at 1500rpm, not 2500rpm. The rpm is feeling really low and when I go up to 2500rpm in each gear I am finding myself at +10 mph than the highest listed mph above on the speedometer.

I hope I have made sense. Need someone to point out whether this is a common problem and any technical know-how for such an issue.

Thanks!

EDIT: After some more driving today, I found out that the 1st and 2nd gear are quite hard to engage into when upshifting or downshifting. Could it be the flywheel, clutch disc or is it the gearbox itself?

  • 2 weeks later...

Love the warm welcome on this forum.

I decided to take the car to the garage and it looks like the clutch is slipping but still has some good time left on it before I replace it. I also had to change the brake cyclinders and the brake shoes as they were worn out and weren't allowing the back wheels to spin freely.

Anyways this topic is resolved now.

Your first post did not appear to make much sense as you thought the clutch was slipping but you then said that in the past week your road speeds were the same as previously but with a lower indicated RPM

That is not indicative of a slipping clutch.......If the clutch was slipping the indicated RPM would be higher for any given road speed

Pleased that you appear to have got the problem sorted and glad that you appreciate the warm welcome that you received........Maybe if your post been a bit clearer, you may have got more answers :)
