Negotiating A Used Toyota Avensis

Well for a non Toyota owner, I'm racking up quite a few posts on these forums:

As I'm at the point of buying, my next query is what's the best way to go about negotiating? Having only needed to buy one car from a dealer in the last 15 years, this is all a bit (lot) new to me.

e.g. What sort of price should I expect a main dealer to knock off an £8-10K car?

People seem to say to not mention up-front if you're paying cash, and to not mention trading in your car etc until you've agreed a price for the car you want to buy.

However the first questions the Salesmen ask are always, "are you financing the vehicle?" and "are you trading in a vehicle?"! - How should you respond to this if doing the above?

Should the process something along the lines of:

  • Agree buy price
  • Agree Trade in price (if it makes a difference my car's MOT is due at the end June, so I'm not expecting much here!)
  • Get niggles (low tyres, scuffs, probles fixed etc)

Does anyone have any tips for buying from a main dealer in this price range/suituation?

Know what your trade-in is realistically worth.

Know the market value of what you are buying - this will mean weeks/months of tracking the market (this also means that you will know if a car has been sitting unsold for a while which strengthens your hand as they will be keen to shift it).

The price to change is the important factor as if they give you an inflated trade-in price the selling price for the new car will probably reflect that.

Use niggles or wanted accessories to negotiate with. The margins on accessories are far higher so they would much rather give you £100 of accessories free than take £100 off the price.Conversely don't pay extra for accessories that the car already has.

You will pay a premium for a Toyota Approved used car but it's peace of mind.
