Air Con

David, you would think so wouldn't you. But perhaps Mike has found a rogue trader who want's to charge the price of a new harness when in reality they will just re-gas it? Who knows?

Like has been said already a harness/loom won't just fail unless damaged by some outside force. Could fail from new due to a wire being put in the wrong pin location of a connector, but that should fail at QC not after the car has being owned for a while, so that can't be the case.

He mentions it as the dealer. Assuming he means main dealer. No not the Nelson one Ha

Hi David,

I am going to have a look for leaves. Would that blockage be in the cabin in the air filter?

Does it receive air from exterior.

Would a vacuum cleaner do the job do you think?

Mike.

All you have to do is un do the clip in the passenger footwell which is under a corner of carpet behind the A/C unit and slide the filter out. It is about 1/2 inch thick and 10 inches square. Leave it out and clear any debris that comes out with it start the engine and run the A/C at 19deg or down further to LO set the fan speed to 2-3 digits. You should feel cold air within 2-3 mins. It does bring in fresh air through the filter and across the evaporator. Try it and see what happens. I am assuming you have climate control with the LCD display if not set your dials to low temp and try

Blocked internal a/c drain? That could account for the pong. Is the carpet wet or damp?

Ok. I've checked for leaves. None.

The a/c clutch isn't turning when the a/c is on in the cabin.

Could this be related to the pressure switch on the gas pipe?

Could the switch be faulty?

The voltage on the connector is 5 volts. Is that normal?

The gas is pressurised and appears normal although I can't definitely say it's at the correct pressure.

Next stop probably an A/C specialist maybe.

The switch on the silver A/C pipe in the engine bay is reading open circuit. My neighbour reckons this switch is faulty.

I take it mike that you have checked fuses

That switch has 3 wires on it. Will let you know what it does and what conditions should be on it over the weekend

Hi David,

We think that the fuse that protects the a/c also does the windscreen wipers? The wipers are working.

We are presuming the fuse is okay.

Those three wires - one is zero volts and the other two are each 5 volts. Don't know why.

My theory was that this is both a low and high pressure off switch.

That's why it has three wires?

I have been looking at the Toyota software and it has a couple of good functions. One is live engine diagnostics whereby it displays all the values of components. Ref voltage , air ,fuel. Everything. It also does the same for A/C and give you s live reading of it un operation. Along with any fault codes. I am not sure why Toyota have not advised you to have it diagnosed rather than the crazy statement of the wiring loom replacement

Well I have a diagnosis for failed air con and it seems to be the compressor not an electrical fault.

So I could get a new one off Toyota or a second hand one from a breakers yard. £545 for the former and £130 for the latter.

I'll not be going for the former and neither will I be returning to the Toyota dealer.

The last time they had it they replaced the rear wash fuse into the spare fuse slot looking for the air con fault!

So I had no rear wash for three months.

I've only just got around to working on it now as I have had a new Qashqai to play with and it has distracted me. Now there's a nice car, but that's for another owner clubs forum.

I'm looking for the part number for the air con compressor on my 2009 iq2.

I'm going to try getting one from a breakers yard but they need the number.

Toyota won't give it to me and apparently it's not possible to find it without removing it from the engine.

Can anyone help me out?

The part no is 88320-74050 and have been quoted £454.56. Not sure if thats plus vat

Hope this helps

Thanks Dave that's great.

I have googled it and think this could apply to models from Oct 2012.

Could mine be the earlier model 88320-74010, Nov 08 to Oct 2012?

I feel like I am nearly there.

The quote was the same and that was inc. vat.

I used my reg as a ref as mine is a 59 plate. If you need an exact part number i will need your reg number

The dealer in question said he has never sold one or ordered one before so guesses its a rare fault

I'm out of my depth here David.

I'm thinking it's the magnetic clutch now and not the compressor.

That would be an 'electrical fault' as Toyota said originally.

I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks so much for your help.

As i have said on here before. Most electrical repairs on modern cars require a person who has/is

1,A chance fault find

2, Previous historic fault knowledge

3, Software diagnostic fault codes

4, highly skilled electronics engineer

Most dealers have a "oh he does the diagnostics" = guess the fault.

People get assigned the job as they are a dabler in all things that are electronic

I can guarantee that with ref to the " wiring loom change out that with the workshop manual and a skilled electronics engineer ( no ref to the motor trade required) it would be possible to identify the A/C fault. It would even be possible to by-pass the operating circuit and operate the A/C clutch with a separate power supply to it

The other thing about main dealers is that they have the luxury to "try via component replacements to guess at the faulty unit which you dont have.

The saga continues.

Today, after some intense diy it turns out that the compressor is okay and the magnetic clutch is okay.

We bypassed the power to the magnet and it functions but the cabin still isn't cooling.

The signal / power is not getting through to the magnetic clutch from the cabin controls.

So it's going to have to be some professional troubleshooting to fix it.

Mike.

Hello Everyone :).

I have just returned from a trip in my IQ2 2010 model and once before i had a problem with the inside misting up and it happened again today. The aircon is always on either cool during summer or warm during the winter at around 20-24 degrees C. I took my pride and joy in for a health check to see why it suddenly started to steam up after 3 years of trouble free running and i was told the cooling gases were at 100-120 ml ( Or some other messurement :) ) and the car should have 380 ml so they topped it up and no more problem. Today the trouble started again and this is less than a year after it happened before. What i wondered was why 3 years no problems and then twice in one year. Is this a common fault ?. I do like my car....was a motorcyclist for 25-30 years and this is my first car and i couldnt be happier....just this small troublesome detail with the a/c. Oh i have the 1.0 litre auto as thats what my licence covers and was wondering about changing my car at some point for a Toyota ( naturally :) ) Hiace van...either the older model 3.0 D4D or the newer model coming out with the 1.6 diesel......Oh Did i say hello....Hello ( Insert smile here :) ). I hope your all well :).

PS I wave to EVERYONE in a IQ when im driving as they do seem a friendly bunch :)

PPS.....No sanity was harmed ( Or used :-) ) in the making of this reply :).

It shouldn't need topped up yearly.  Have the system checked for leaks before filling again.

Hi,

Do we know what the fix was in the end?  This is mirroring my experiences too at present with the fuses checked, regassed today after pressure check but the compressor still fails to spin when the AC is engaged.

No i am not familiar with this problem. I dont have the manual to hand to check which fuses cover all aspecs of the A/C. It should dpin even if you had lost the gas. Its more of an electrical issue. Its not an area of tbe car that i have needed to inspect yet
