Hi troops my car is due a major service been quoted £349, from main dealers, any one recomend an independent garage near Glasgow that could do it but still retain the warranty by using Toyota parts its only done 28000, don't want to be paying hyped up costs to main dealers. any info welcome folks ;)

Toyota service intervals are every 12 months or 10,000 miles - so presumably yours is due the 4 year/40,000 mile service. Toyota's Fixed Price Servicing scheme is quite competitive on costs - see http://www.toyota.co.uk/service-and-maintenance/car-servicing

They have quoted you for a Full+ service, whereas a Full service may well be more applicable.

You don't say whether your car is petrol or diesel - so have a look at the link above and compare the service info to see whether a Full service at £239 would be more suitable.

Bear in mind that under the Fixed Price Servicing scheme, the brake fluid change is an extra £39 - and the brake fluid should also be changed every two years.

Sorry FB it is Diesel and 4 year service is due, was quoted same price by 2 main dealers, last years service cost more for labour than parts.

Toyota fixed price service works out at £349 also, so if i cant find an independent looks like main dealer wins again.

As far as I'm aware (as per block exemption rules)... The original warranty (which the car has from new) allows you to have it serviced outwith Toyota, but the onus is on you to prove the manufacturer's schedule was adhered to, and servicing must be done by a vat registered garage using oem quality parts (not necessarily Toyota parts as far as I'm aware). Therefore you could have any decent garage service your car but make sure you keep proof of what was done, and what parts were fitted.

However, although this should keep the original warranty up, maybe having a Toyota History would help for any faults after the warranty period (like the 7 year good-will gesture for major engine faults on the T25, which AFAIK was only given to those with Toyota History all the way).

The rules are different for extended warranties tho, they can specify that the car must be serviced by Toyota etc, as per their small print, since block exemption rules don't apply.

I researched this recently cos we just bought an Auris with one Toyota stamp and two non-Toyota (but main dealer) stamps. I spoke to two different Toyota dealers (not the ones selling the car) who both said the warranty would be fine.

Cheers Alan that's good to know, the car does have a full Toyota service history, when I called the main dealer they said it was now out of warranty and gave me three options, but then reminded them that I was told that it had the five year warranty, they then advised me to have it done with Toyota parts, which is obviously the more expensive service.

When I was enquiring about the service they said that on a major service they change both oil and diesel filters?? I always assumed that they were changed anytime it was in for a service,or does that only happen on a major service?

I was thinking of trading it in for something else soon, so don't want to be spending a lot on it just enough to keep the warranty in place.

Thanks for replying.

The 5 year warranty came in some time during 2010, so I'm not sure whether yours will be in or out (both ours have a "5 year warranty" sticker on the back window if that helps). Re the fuel filter they're not changed as often as the oil filter so would probably be part of the major service right enough. If you're trading in soon it probably won't make much (if any) difference to the price whether you had an extra toyota stamp, it would matter more if there was a service missing.

Any car first registered after 1st June 2010 will have the five year warranty. Cars registered before 1st June 2010 will have the 3 year warranty.
