I'm not sure if this has come up before, its bugging me, my local Toyota do not sell a "kit" for these. I have to buy the tensioners and roller separately not forgetting the belt. comes up to 300+

they advise just to change the belt, or the belt with the hydraulic tensioner if high mileage.

as its a taxi I try to stick with genuine parts especially when it comes to something important as this.

I always change the water pump whilst the belt gets done. The genuine one is made by Aisin, can you buy these without going to Toyota or does anyone recommend a decent make.

I am aiming to change the belt at every 40/50,000.

I bought the car at 84,000. at the time when I bought it, I changed the belt and the hydraulic tensioner. left the other tensioner pulley and roller.

Looking at blueprint they do different kits.

I have attached the examples.

Gates do not sell the hydraulic tensioner in their kit. although they do a kit with water pump included.

I have the same engine in Avensis Verso.I changed belt, water pump tension spring and two rollers.Pump was changed first time on 230000km.Belt was changed first time on 100 000 first time and after 130 000 it was still good looking. It is always question to change all ore not.Toyota recommends belt change on 60000 Miles.

I recommend do not make any experiment with belt manufacturer take Toyota for sure.I made mistake with Blue print clutch and what happened it is not as original, some vibrations occurred lately.

Thank you narent1.

I want to stick with Toyota but do I change just the belt, or belt + hydraulic tensioner or the hydraulic tensioner, tensioner pulley & roller.

did you not try consider LuK on the clutch I have seen alot of OE clutches with LuK stamped on them.

To save any confusing I am going to attach a picture of the hydraulic tensioner on its own, then tensioner pulley and roller with belt.

out of interest do you remember how much all that cost you?

I live in Croatia(near Dubrovnik). One hour of work in Toyota is 200 kuna and in Euros it is 26E.In near by Hercegovina (B&H)it cost me 50% cheaper, in big good garage.I was lucky to have good mechanic that worked some 8 hours and he changed all together, water pump to.It is not easy to change belt in my Avensis verso. They told me, "never again" for that money(I payed for 6 hours total cost 150 Convertible Marks ,approximately 75 Euro for work.I payed for the belt some 90Euros,200E for rolers and tension-er,150 E for the pump in Toyota shop .The only problem was, impossibility to work in so little space on the side of engine.Auto Data suggest 6 hours of work for the belt but extra work on the pump takes a lot of time to clean and prepare seat for it.I worked on my previous car Mazda and changing belt and rollers was not problem(water pump was real pain, hidden behind and under cylinder cover ).One other thing was much better on Mazda, were replaceable and easy to find Japanese bearings.Toyota made it impossible to replace just bearings and you have to buy body and bearing.I noticed that you call this tensioner "hydraulic",i am not sure it is really hydraulic, but only spring in aluminum body.I am working on my Toyota and changed Clutch, few months ago in friends garage(worked together with mechanic for 7-8 hours)

was that for both tensioners, hydraulic and pulley tensioner?, how do I get a copy of auto data it maybe handy to have.

Toyota called it hydraulic, so does ADL blueprint.

it is this one I am referring to hydraulic.

You do not need to change any part that is not worn, timing belt only, my avensis did 200000 km + with two time belt change.

Thank you so that's 124,000 miles right, I'm hoping to double that and more on same engine.

this tensioner is that one that I think can not be really hydraulic, because it takes fluid to be hydraulic. This clutch is probably after market for Toyota. On my car all 100% of the parts are made in Japan.I will try to find old one and check.

I don't think its aftermarket, I doubt Toyota would allow their name to be printed on a aftermarket part and it also has a Toyota part number on it too.

if you go on eBay and look at the used clutches/flywheel they most likely will have Toyota and LuK stamped on them.

My dad's about to get a Verso with this engine; It's done about 60k miles but, if there isn't a receipt in the service history, is there a way I can check whether the belt needs changing?

if its got 60,000, its most likely due, sometimes they put a stick on the timing belt cover to say when it was done.

Yeah, I'm going to have to dig through the service receipts to see if it has been done. Really hope it has as it looks like an expensive job; I still remember that video you posted on how to replace it on an Avensis!

I am thinking about having a crack at doing my cam belt myself and was wondering if the corolla 2.0 d4d is the same engine and there's a Haynes manual for the Corolla.

I don't do facebook bud.

I have checked my Avensis Verso-made in Japan old clutch. It is Aisin not LuK,Toyota name is stamp forged in plate not color stamp.Bearing is NSK -Nippon Seikō K.K.Plate on the engine 1cd-ftv 85 KW is single mas not dual mas.

LUK make a lot of clutches as OE for Toyota and everyone else for that matter. HOWEVER do not fall into the trap of thinking an LUK part will be exactly the same as genuine one

Original Equipment manufacturer is one of the most overused and misleading terms being used by marketeers.

When Toyota or whoever go to a supplier, they specify a clutch with a certain specification, which will be tested to perform to Toyota's build standards. When the OE manufacturer sells that part to the aftermarket world, it will most defiantly will NOT be the same specification. It will fit, it will do a job, but it will not be the same high spec as the original product. You see this happen time and time again and is one of the reasons why the pricing is so much cheaper when you go aftermarket. I would take the phrase OE manufacturer with a pinch of salt, yes they make clutches and a whole manner of other goods, but they also do a "second line" to do a job in the aftermarket world

Personally I would not change your timing belt for a non genuine kit, I would put a genuine belt on it and check the adjuster/idlers for wear/noise and make a decision then

Kingo
