Really Noisy Aygo (2007 Model)

Recommended Posts

Hi all, Bought my Aygo about 6 months ago now (My first car), all was fine until i noticed the car becoming louder and louder as time went by... now it is at the point where at 40+ MPH i cant hear the passenger speak, i do not know where to look now... note; i have tried most thing with the exhaust... this doesn't seem to be the problem i.e. the back pressure is good and most parts have been replaced with aftermarket parts... ps. i have checked the back box and the baffles seem to be ok...

anyone else had these problems ... common or not is what i am asking and if anyone has a solution ?

i would be grateful for any replies and advise :)

Regards James.

Do you have the original manufactures design exhaust system fitted still and have you still got the standard manufacturers air intake system?

Is your engine oil level correct?

Posted

Yes everything in the car is standard... not the original exhaust but parts that have the original manufactures design i would of thought and the oil level is spot on and is checked regularly.

here are the parts i have changed... including changing gaskets etc..

Can you see any problems? if not any other suggestions? really at the point were i am giving up with this car, such a shame as well i love the engine!

Third party parts aren't made to the original design as the original design would be protected by the car manufacturer or component supplier using industrial design rights. Third party parts are presumably designed to be compatible - much in the same way that compatible ink cartridges work in a particular brand of printer.

I cant see this been a problem as long as the parts are to a good quality standard, many other cars I've worked on have been fine? you get any other thoughts ? ... I was thinking road noise ?... tyres maybe ?

its just really annoying? funny thing is it seems to get louder when I have more passengers .. when im on my own its bearable haha :(

Posted

What sort of noise are you getting - mechanical, road noise, wind noise?

Posted

hard to describe the noise really ... it sound like really bad vibration noise, however like I said when its bad you cant hear yourself think ... never mind the passenger lol... surely the road/wind noise cant be this bad ? the noise seems to have got worse and worse since I bought the car.

sorry for the lack of information to go on... tempted to take it to a Toyota garage see wtf is going on lol.. don't want to get my pants pulled down tho lol .. with the prices and idea how much they would charge to take a look and comment on what's up or if its normal.

yhanks for your replies by the way .... appreciated

Tyres? Wheel bearing?

Posted

Definatly wheel bearings. The sound may also come from the drivers side or passenger side or from one of the rear wheels. Don't worry they are not expensive either. A way to check it is if the car is on a ramp, wiggle all the tires left and right with your hand. If it allows you to wobble it left and right with your hand it means the wheels bearings are gone. Check all the wheels like this. One warning, might want to do it ASAP as my dad dident do it and his wheel fell off..... I'm not joking, fell of on the road, lucky it was not the motorway which he was making his way towards.

Posted

Also, forgot to add, the bearings make a loud sound at 40 MPH. 50 is lower and at 60- 70 low and then 70+ MPH higher. I dont know why this is but there is probably some scientific explanation. Anything below 40 normally has a lower sound.

Thanks for the replies guys ill give the wheel bearings a check when i get home from work and ill keep you posted... plus i think the wheels are on their way out i.e. nearly bald so could also be that....

ill keep you updated hopefully it is the bearings... at least i have something to work with then. if its not that i think it must be ridiculous road noise.

Sounds like your Aygo could do with some love and care!

Toyota's have a reputation for reliability but that does not excuse the owner when servicing is neglected.....Tyres should never be left to "NEARLY BALD" :(

Just checked the wheel bearing 5-10 mins ago everything feels nice and solid no play at all? on the way home i noticed there was quite a bit of vibration coming from the back plastic panels around the window (3 door)? could this be it i am wondering.

the car has a part service history and has been fully serviced while i have owned it by me and my dad and has only covered 30,000 miles for an 57 plate, so should be in top condition. just wondering if this noise is normal! ?

ps, just put on some fresh michelin tyres on all round :)

have you checked the gearbox oil level, with your car being pre-owned you need to check everything even if it seems unlikely,

i always used to replace all fluids straight away so you knew ,brake fluid, gearbox oil, engine oil, power steering fluid (if needed)

that way i had a starting point for all future maintenance.

I know the engine oil has been done very recently... ive personally not done any of the other ones tho, guess i should probably get round to doing it. Ive just put new disks and pads on the front and shoes on the rear so im good for stopping power. I think this is going to be a long process narrowing it down and pin pointing the source...

the joys of motoring ahah.... thanks for the replies everyone.. cheers

can you record the sound and put it onto youtube with a link for us? i cant see wheel bearings would be that loud! i reckon its the exhaust personally or some part of the exhaust system, you only need one tiny little hole and it can make it loud, and you cant see the top of the exhaust without dropping it down.

Posted

ill give it a shot on Monday/tuesday when i get a new phone. thanks for your time

Posted

a quick way to see if your exhaust is leaking is to put your hand over the tail pipe and block it up ,if it is leaking the gasses will be forced to

exit through the hole and you should be able to locate the leak pretty quickly

Rather than use your hand and risk a burn use a potatoe instead.

sorry i meant wearing a glove not your bare hand ,its easy to give advise and leave somethink out when you know what you mean.

Like this idea, kills two birds with one stone you end up with a chip for tea.

Guys the exhaust is fine, i have tested the back pressure and all is good. and i have new parts on so there shouldn't be any holes or leaks etc...

no disrespect to you but i would suggest that your not experienced in the repair of cars as your posts suggests your inexperienced.

I have been doing cars now for well over ten years and in order to help you we need to do a process of ellimination, if you can sort out a sound recording for me i can help you,

The exhaust system starts right at the manifold on the engine right the way back, i personally think that it could possibly be that but as soon as i hear the sound i will tell you.

The fact you say it gets so loud you can barely hear the passenger talking suggests its not bearing noise, if it was bearing noise being that loud you would have movement on either the stub axle or the front wheels and i would almost certainly say you would feel that in the handling of the car.

the only thing that can cause a sound as loud as i think you mean would be something in the exhaust system.

The standard exhaust systems on these cars are made of cheese! well not literally but they are cheap budget cars and i would say almost certainly that there are parts of the exhaust system on the car that are from the factory and if its an 07 plate it would have been built at least 7 years ago and mild steel doesn't last long!

Not only that you say the exhaust has had parts changed, what gaskets were used? was gun gum used? has any part of the system been welded?

let me hear the sound and ill help you. In my honest professional opinion i would say its either exhaust noise, engine noise or a braking component noise. if the noise is present when the car is stationary even if its not loud it would rule out bearing or brake noise leaving exhaust or engine.

also what rubbers and hangers? cheap copy exhaust parts are crap for lack of better word, the shape and bends are not always great to be honest. With car parts I am a very true believer of buy cheap buy twice! not only that just because you have bought it new doesnt mean it actually works!!

not only that ive seen a million and one times before where people have changed cats and used the old sensor thats got a mullered thread, they fit this in and doesnt seal properly making a noise so unless i can hear the noise im lost for advice

I will bear this idea in mind if i ever run out of chip fat!

Rory, ive had a few people look at the exhaust including my dad and his mechanic friend who works on all types of cars most days and is not often wrong, so i was just going what he had told me, i understand that i have not checked the CAT with is attached to the manifold, as it looks like a pain in the ***** to get to (is this true?) and ill get you a recording as soon as possible. As for your other ideas ive checked the play in the axle and front wheels and it all seems nice and solid (hardly any play) and the noise only occurs when driving at approx. 40mph +. as for the brakes ive had all of them stripped down and cleaned and check for any wear etc..

thanks for you patience and everyone else ill get you a recording as soon as possible.
