Hi,not long bought a 2002 rav-4 2 litre all wheel drive,my first toyota, fitted new rear brake shoes and new fitting kit(but need a right hand h/brake cable(sticking slightly, but carried on with the job fitted new rear discs/pads and new calipers,as the other ones were that bad i needed a blowlamp to try and move the sliding pins.

fitted new flexi hoses to the calipers, and new copper ones to the middle, bled brakes starting with furthest away, and did front also, used new brake fluid, but pedal spongy, was ok before fitting rear stuff, but of course the sliding pins were seized solid, cxhecked over all pipes i had fitted no leaks at all.

But pedal very spongy.any help would be great,

thanks.

Does the pedal stiffen up if you rapidly pump the pedal? Presumably you're bleeding the brakes by pumping the pedal? Often this isn't successful if you've lost a lot of fluid by breaking into brake pipes / hoses and the car is equipped with ABS. The brakes need to be bled using a pressure or vacuum system. In extreme cases, it can be necessary to run the ABS pump to clear air out of the ABS unit.

Thanks for the quick reply, when i do pump the pedal quickly,it slightly comes up,but have taken on board what you said ,and the village where i stay, has a local garage ,and will see if i can borrow a better brake bleeding tool, will be better than my bit of clear tubing into a clear bottle, will post back a reply when i try other system out on monday.

thanks again,dougie.

Hy,me again, forgot to say,i did use a girling hose clamping tool on the inner rear flexi hoses before i fitted calipers and flexi pipe at calipers, did that on both sides, and thought i would not lose to much fluid, but it hasn,t worked out.?

thanks,dougie.

Its not just the loss of fluid its the ingress of air to the system
