Headlight Issues

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, I've had a little search around for what I'm looking for and couldn't quite find the right thing.

I'm a total Volvo man but, my friend has a 2002 Yaris which failed its MOT because one headlight is 'discoloured' and isn't very clear... is this a common thing? What's the best way of rectifying that?

Also, one of the headlight spring clips are missing so, obviously the bulb is moving around and isn't aimed correctly. I've had a look on the internet for this part but, haven't had much luck so far. Is there a website you lot know of to get Toyota parts, or do you have a sales section on this forum?

Thanks for any advice you may have, I'm a Toyota novice! :)

Hello Jason - welcome to Toyota Owners Club.

External discolouration of the plastic headlight lenses over time happens to any car, regardless of manufacturer or model. Lenses can be cleaned using a variety of products from purpose-made kits (Meguiars do a headlight cleaning kit) to using toothpaste and a soft cloth. See http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/146892-headlight-cleaning/

As regards the headlight bulb clip, the most obvious choice is a scrapyard, or you could send Parts King a personal message, giving details of the car and what you want, to ask whether the spring clip is available as a separate item to the headlight unit. If you need to buy a complete headlight unit, you could probably source one via eBay.

For Parts King, go to the Community page, scroll down to Sponsors Corner and then Lindop Toyota.

Right depending on model ( PM chassis number to confirm ) you may be able to purchase replacement headlamp lenses the metal bulb retainer is however not available as a separate part and this may be difficult to source as most scrap yards will want to sell you complete lamps ( possibly with lenses in the same condition ) not remove tiny wire clips rendering the whole unit useless.

Thanks for the answers. As I say, this is my friend's car but, she says she has cleaned the headlight and it's made no difference so, it's possibly on the inside maybe? I've never really paid too much attention to her lights and how they look so, I've not seen it myself.

I've seen a few Toyota Yaris driving round with slightly dulled looking headlights so, I didn't know if it was a known problem with a known solution, that's all.

I've checked eBay already and seen a few fairly cheap headlights for sale but, I'll check Parts King, too. Another thing, if I do remove the headlight, is there a need to remove the bumper too?

Thanks.

Its not a matter of cleaning the lamps, the lenses are plastic and years of UV damage cause the plastic to tarnish, in all but the most extreme cases a Plastic headlamp polishing kit can be purchased and the lenses polished back a nice clear lens.

Ok, well, I was just replying to the other guy's suggestion of cleaning them, saying that I believe they have been cleaned.

Anyway, the bumper, do I have to remove that?

Yes you need to access a mounting bolt behind the bumper, remove all the upper fixings and arch liner clips from the bumper unclip the top edge and pull the bumper forwards/down leaving it attached along the bottom.
