Interior Mirror / Windscreen Nightmare

Hi All,

So I recently bought a Yaris. Loving it but one slight issue:

Was adjusting my passenger side mirror, manually by leaning over (not sure if all models require manual adjusting - I was able to adjust my mirror from the drivers side of my previous car but it wasn't a Toyota). As I sat back up I somehow elbowed by interior mirror causing it to fall off.

Not only did it come off the windscreen but it took some of the glass with it!!!

Somehow it also managed to come apart (the mirror section and the bracket section separated where the ball and socket 'joint' is (apologies for my lack of technical knowledge but best description I can give).

It looks like these two parts should just be able to push back together but no amount of force I apply is enabling that and I cant reattach my mirror anyway as there is a chunk of glass stuck to the silver bracket.

Looks like I'm going to have to call a windscreen repairer :( anyone else encountered this type of problem before? Ive seen lots of comments online about interior mirror falling off but not where it takes the glass with it!

The mirror bracket should slide onto a fitting that is bonded to the windscreen - see http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/18037-how-to-remove-the-rearview-mirror/

Are you saying that some of the windscreen glass came away, or did the fitting that the mirror slides onto come off?

If it is just the fitting, I believe that can just be re-bonded to the windscreen. If some of the windscreen glass has come away, it may be a new windscreen. Your insurance may cover windscreen replacement (usually an excess applies) or repairs to the glass (often free). If you go down the insurance route, make sure you use the glass company the insurance company contracts with.

Thanks for the quick reply. It seems to be windscreen glass.

I've taken a couple of pics (excuse the chipped nail varnish)

Ive contacted Autoglass who have given me an appointment for tomorrow. Its going to be a replacement, they said any interior windscreen damage requires a replacement rather than a repair

Makes me wonder whether the windscreen had already been damaged externally, and the knock on the mirror was the last resort. As regards the mirror, the ball should push back into the socket - perhaps cooling the ball down with some ice or cold water or some lubrication may make it easier to get the two parts back together. Failing that, you could see whether the Autoglass technician can do it.

If you need a new mirror, you could send Parts King a personal message, detailing what car you have and what you want, and he should be able to provide a price - for Parts King go to the Community page, and scroll down to Sponsors Corner and Lindop Toyota.

This may match your car - http://www.amazon.co.uk/MAYBELLINE-NAIL-VARNISH-POLISH-Gunmetal/dp/B007X36IZS

I have had this happen to me in my Fiesta but just the mount coming away from the windscreen; Never heard of it taking a chunk of the windscreen glass with it as well before!

Remind me never to make you mad!!

Thanks guys.

The autoglass technician fitted a new windscreen but even he couldn't put the mirror back together so looks like I will be having to buy a new one. Thank you Frostyballs for the advice there, much appreciated.

I suspect there may have been some previous damage that wasn't visible before as I only got the car recently so cant prove it but I'm sure I'm not that strong. Even so, doesn't look like I will be needing any self defence classes with an elbow like mine :)

Not impressed i've already had to put a windscreen claim in when i've had the car just under a month, but at least i'm fully comp so I didn't have to fork out the full £327 I was quoted!
