Noisy Rear Suspension.

My 2009 Avensis D4D has developed a strange groaning sound on the nearside rear suspension when driving over speed bumps e.t.c. and whilst turning in particularly to the left. Also a cluncking noise through the stearing columb when turning either way and when front suspension is travelling upwards, any ideas ?

I can tell you that steering column clunk might be front anti roll bar bushes, if not then drop link bushes, if not steering rack bushed (these are used when mounting rack on to the front metal cross member) and then follow the trail really. These are all pretty cheap to fix.well mine are i hope yours are too.

Rear suspension, again check bushes these only require a visible inspection, take led torch or anything with light park the car up half on a pavement and get under it and give everything a visual check, these manky rubbers are easy to spot. If nothing shouts at you check rear shocks and coils by pushing your car down from the boot and see if it bounces up and down. It should only bounce back up not down and this bounce back up should only be ONE. If more, shocks are going or gone. And do this on a quiet road and see if you can hear clunk while checking shocks.

Regards,

Waqar

Many thanks for your tips Waqar, particuraly the clunk on the steering columb i will get my mechanic to check those out.

He did a full inspection of the back end today and could not find any undue wear, i guess we will just have to let it develop.

Thanks for your time, Perfic Pete.

Does anyone else have any ideas ?
