Toyota Avensis Spec/trim Levels

Hey Guys,

I'm new here so let me introduce myself and hopefully will get a warm welcome :) .

My name is Paul, I live in Somerset and work in a care home. I am 21 and just moved out also to top it off I was hit by a drunk driver on the 03/05/14. My car (Vauxhall Astra MK5 SXI) has been written off and has been given some money for my loss. I have been looking through eBay, autotrader etc and found a car for sale. £350 for a 1998 Toyota Avensis. 12 months MOT, 1 Month Tax and in good condition. Now the main reason why I have joined isto ask a few questions and never owning a toyota before I thought this is a great time to make a few friends and maybe in the future to go to some car meets :) . The car is a saloon I believe.

toyota-avensis-hatchback-2-0-vvti-gls-5d,
This is not my car in this photo as I will take some tomorrow but using this as a reference.

What trim/spec level is the GLS, I have the 2.0 petrol 3SFE engine 126bhp.

I hope its a good spec as it has 4 electric windows etc. But the wheels are steel with plastic hub caps so then I thought maybe its not a high spec. Thing is haven't seen a low spec car with rear electric windows unless it was an optional extra.

Thank you guys. Will upload a few photos.

Thank you guys

Paul

Hi Paul, Welcome :)

have a look at;

http://www.helpfindmea.co.uk/cars/specs/toyota-avensis-specifications-139/

this shows the spec's available and what they include.

and this;

http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/facts-and-figures/toyota/avensis/saloon-1997/

I put GLS one below CDX. so yours is one before TOTR.

the picture you have shown is of a facelift mk1 avensis from 2000-2003 your 1998 is the mk1.

what's the mileage on it?

Hey avensisd4d786,

Thanks for the reply :) So basicly the CDX is the highest spec for the mk1 Avensis?.

Also the only difference i can see from the GLS to the CDX is the CDX has alloys, cd changer.

The millage is about 120k.

here is a photo of the car.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul,

Welcome to the forum and I can tell you that apart from the steel wheels and some interior trim, you have a lot of kit.

Check my posts and you can find out a few things from my experience with my car.

Don't worry about the audio system. You can change it for one of the newer mp3 systems. Mine is Sony and I added a cd changer, then a Connects2 usb to play music from memory sticks. The Speakers may have failed by now - I installed JBL 6" 2way Speakers.

The car body if cared for, hardly rusts. Make sure you have 2 keys minimum, or 3 if you get the grey courtesy key.

Make sure the engine has had the cambelt changed, and there is a history or a sticker confirming this. If not, don't take chances and get it done.

The transmission should be okay, but listen out for a whine as the bearings are known to wear after high mileage.

If the EML comes on with the engine running, the O2 sensor may be at fault. That is easy to diagnose as the system can be checked using a jumper wire in the OBD socket.

The sunroof can play about especially when sliding back.

The car looks nice and it's a hatchback. The rear wiper can play around in intermittent mode.

I could go on but Pete will tell me off.

Ask any questions.

Konrad

Hey Konrad,

Thanks for posting :) feeling very welcome here already .
I will change the wheels for some going on eBay, maybe some 17's. I believe the PCD is 5 x 100?.

The headunit had been changed but will upgrade it to play bluetooth from my phone :)

The sunroof was leaking but fixed it bun unfortunately cant open it again.

The car Idles very low about 600rpm so will change spark plugs and clean throttle body and will update further. The Speakers quite poor, crackle so will change them with some aftermarket ones. Can anybody update me further on the size, I've heard they are 5" but not too sure, I dont want to be spoonfed all the information but a little help i do appreciate it guys :).

The cambelt has been change at 60k but it may need doing again, Will update you guys further with some pics like throttle body, spark plugs, TLC.

Many thanks everyone

Paul

Hi Paul,

I have 6.5" Speakers in ahelps doors. I fitted JBL GTO627 2 way Speakers.

I used 6mm mdf cut to a shape. This helps speaker magnet clear the windows. The Speakers depth is 54mm.

The original door cards and grills are used.

Using this info should help you.

Thanks Konrad for the information, fixed the low idle by ajusting the throttle cable, next problem i have is a rattle when accelerating.Think it could be the heat shield its so annoying i will upload a video so you can hear it for yourself.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul again,

My car always idles at close to 600 rpm. I think it's the nature of the lean burn engine. If your air-con works, turn it on and the idle revs will rise. Same with lights, heater and power steering, the engine compensates for the load.

It helps with the fuel economy.
