Unidentified Noise Causing Me Concern

Hi folks,

Last few days my Auris 2l d4d has been making a strange, almost rattling sound. When I start the engine, it makes the noise and when the car is in neutral, parked up. However, when I'm driving it is fine.

I'm concerned to what this could be. I'm thinking of taking it to Toyota for them to take a look.

Do they charge a flat fee for investigating such issues?

Advice appreciated.

Cheers frosty.

It sounds like that could be causing issue.

Any estimate as to how much toyota would charge to correct this?

Suppose it depends whether its a case of the heat shield just being loose or needing to be replaced. One owner has taken theirs off: http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/137626-auris-rattle/?hl=%2Bheat+%2Bshield#entry1224598

I am totally clueless when it comes to doing any DIY - let alone car DIY.

if heat shield needed replacing, what would I be looking at in approximate cost?

Would have thought that, if it is the heat shield, it needs tightening.

My heatshield became loose after driving on some bumpy country roads once - popped into a local kwik fit who reattached it for free

I took it into troy garage who removed it for me. They said it was corroded. He said you don't need to stick another one on.
