Previous figures were disappointing (around 40 m.p.g.), and, I suspect will normally continue to be so (most of my trips are 12 - 15 miles return with many queues waiting to use the same bit of road as everyone else.

A return trip between South Humberside and Tonbridge, with Shell's best grade 4 star, and fairly frequent use of the air conditioning, gave a figure of about 51 m.p.g.

Do you think the improvement is solely because of the fuel?

Doubtful

The short journeys and stopping in traffic will kill your consumption, but as you see, over a longer journey better figures were attained

Of course not.

A better fuel gave a marginal improvement before the recent long trip, but it's the nearly constant driving, instead of nearly constant start stop, which gave the better figures.

You must be pleased to know it is just the nature of your trips that is hitting the mpg!
