Egr Problems

Hi hope you can help,

I bought a rav 4 T180 just over a year ago and have had egr problems basicly from the start. I replaced the Egr at my local Toyota garage and had all the relevant other things done. Yet im still constantly having problems dash lights up like a xmas tree and goes into limp mode.

I really am at the end of my tether, I bought a Toyota as I thought they were really reliable cars its the most unreliable ive ever owned. I have absolutely no faith in it and now don't venture far from home.

Please help !

Have you been back to the dealership ? If they did the work and it is not up to standard they should sort it

Hi Diane and welcome to the club.I am sorry that you are having problems.

Thanks for the welcome. Toyota said the new egr is not faulty. That its somthing else so no help there. In the past year I've read up on everything on the forum trying to solve the problem .

I don't think it does. Ive put about 1/2 litre in since I got it in Oct 2012

Did they give you a clue as to what the something else was ?

There flow chart points to the next step being the injectors.

The ones that they have tested and have said are fine.

Then it's down to the quality of gas and oil you use.

A premium brand will be better and changing the oil to a synthetic C2 oil will help.

Then you will have to take it on runs to clean out the gunk.

Drive it like you stole it... :) but don't redline it :thumbsup:

After a while all should be well.

It seems as if you are getting the "we do not know what is wrong but we will throw some more of your money at it,you never know we might strike lucky"

Have you considered a second opinion from a company that specialise in diesels or a recommended independent garage? These places spend a lot of money on diagnostic equipment and they know how to use it!!

There are places out there who depend on word of mouth to bring in business

Any members, local to Diane,who can pass on any such places that they use ?

Along with the new EGR you said "all other relevant things" what where these and what fault codes are you getting since the valve was replaced?

Can anyone honestly say that they have not passed on to someone in trouble things that they have read, and learned on these pages that have been posted before???

I have learned much on previous posts and I admit to passing it on where I thought it may help a member who has asked for advice.

Is that not what this and other clubs try to foster? Am I wrong in this then because I thought, it was!

Back to the lady member in trouble with her wheels anyone???

I totally agree Del, sad but as you can see I have removed his post and suspended him for 10 days as this conversation should have been conducted using the PM system.

Not that I care what he thinks but this is the type of crap we had before they started their own club and recently we have had none of this my clubs better than yours nonsense.

FYI - I used Bing and Google , there are more knowledgeable people on the web without resorting to poaching from other forums.

Yes I have asked advice from recomended diesel specialists. Non of them have seen the lumps of carbon that I take out of The Egr when blocked. I gad my manifold taken off and cleaned in an special bath that removes any baked on carbon. My codes are always the same P0400 and I think the other is P0401

P0400 = Exhaust gas recirculation flow, this is a well documented issue with AD series diesel engines as you are most probably aware of by now, P0401 is unusual though as it is not listed as used on a 2AD-FHV ( 180 engined ) Rav4 so may need to be confirmed?

You state that you had a repair last year by your Toyota dealer having a new EGR and associated parts ( what other parts ? ) and that you keep getting lumps of carbon getting trapped in the EGR valve, this is a symptom of a faulty EGR cooler something Toyota added to the repair procedure for a car that presents with P0400. Toyota updated their technical service bulletin in January this year to include the fitting a series of modified parts from a much later version of the AD engine ( possibly in excess of 20 parts ranging from EGR valves, coolers pipes, manifolds and gaskets and over 9 hours worth of labour to fit them on a RAV. The latest bulletin reference is EG-0411T-0412.

Unfortunately due to the age of your car is falls outside of Toyota's warranty extension of 7 years which covers this issue and the repair depending on the level of modification needed costs in excess of a £1000 even a Toyota's warranty rate and a very early car having had no previous repairs/modifications can top £2000 at Toyota's warranty rate.

I'm sure none of the above will be of any consolation, but go back to your dealer and refer them to the bulletin and discuss it with them, if you are the first owner or purchased the car from a Toyota dealer and have a full TOYOTA service history ask the dealer to approach Toyota for goodwill, if you are not the original owner, didn't purchase from a Toyota dealer and don't have full TOYOTA service history you will not get any assistance i'm afraid , but push your dealer for discount/assistance in light of the monies you have already spent.

Larger bore pipe from a newer model put on (not sure what that was it may have been the cooler pipe you mentioned) All pipes and manifold cleaned. A fuel addative cleaner added The car was with them for a couple of days then yoyo'd back and forward to them for a few month before they gave up on it .

It doesn't have full service history, and im not its first owner. Im just the fool that's now trying to fix it.

If the repair was before January this year then it would not have included the EGR cooler modifications as Toyota only added this modification to the P0400 repair procedure this January.
