Time And Cost Guide For Replacing Clutch In Mk1 Avensis 1.8 Gs

Hi,

The clutch on my 1998 Avensis is slipping now so I am going to start collecting prices for having a new clutch.

Has anyone had a clutch change ? Could you please post the hours charged and parts cost ?

Clearly prices vary from place to place and from one year to the next however any figures particularly the hours taken would be useful.

Many thanks in advance.

Matt

Last April (2013) I had a clutch change on my 2001 1.8 Vvti Avensis which had done 104,000 miles. I was very pleased with the work done which was a complete new clutch assembly and all the other bits (thrust race etc. including new oil in the gearbox.) it took half a day and cost £249.99 at Mr Clutch at Kingston Upon Thames. Mr Clutch has many National garages and I am sure you will find one near you. The car has now done over 113,000 miles and the clutch is fine.

Thanks, that sounds fine. I had a very rough idea that it could be three or four hours work plus parts which will vary from one manufacturer to another.

As for clutch kits I am under the impression Toyota use LUK clutches, so given a choice of parts LUK might be preferable.

When I had my clutch changed a few years back, my mechanic completed the job in about 2 hours! I remember leaving the car at 9am and after 11am got the call to come and collect the car. My mechanic was on his own at that time. I still use him as he was Toyota trained, and works I a local garage near me.

The main thing is to go to a trusted garage who will fix the car properly. Check recommendations.

Thanks, Konrad.

2 hours solo for a clutch change, that sounds even better.

I use a good local garage who I trust. On the previous MOT test I had authorised them to replace rear shocks and rack ends which were down as advisories from the test before if needed without phoning me. The tester said they showed wear but unless I was going to do a big mileage they would keep without compromising safety. So they had a chance to do work and generate a bill but didn't as it wasn't necessary work .

I was hoping to get an idea of the time involved so I have a rough idea what I am in for knowing the hourly rate the garage I use charges.

Matthew,

Remember I said 'Toyota trained mechanic'. He knows the car and what to do.

The mk1 Avensis is more straight forward compared to the Ford Mondeo (did I swear?) which apparently needed the sub frame to be removed!

I hope you get the right result.
