06 Liftback Load Cover- What Is Missing?

Hi,

I bought an '06 2.0D4vvti 5dr T-Spirit with 69k on the clock. All seems ok apart from the load cover, which seems to want to drop into the boot if I touch it with the tailgate open.

I had a Carina2 years ago and that had a plastic insert/hook each side at the front corner of the load deck, as has my son's '01 Corolla. I've attached a photo (hopefully) of what I'm seeing at the moment.

Having looked on eBay for similar ones they all seem to have a lack of clips. Is this right?

Can anybody let me know what, if anything, is missing. Ideally send a photo of yours please if you would be so kind.

If it turns out that this is a common problem how have people overcome it?

Thanks,

The 72 views would be from a variety of members - not necessarily even Avensis owners, let alone Avensis saloon owners. The fitting pictured on the luggage cover doesn't exactly look pristine, so I would imagine something is missing. Does there appear to be anything missing from the interior boot panels nearer the tailgate where the luggage cover should rest?

I managed to find another Avensis Mk2 liftback nearby and persuaded them to let me compare load covers. There are no additional clips and the only difference was the lack of a sun blind on their car.

I stripped mine down last night as the forward edge of mine seemed a bit floppy. Drilled out the rivets for the sun blind retaining plate and found that the foam moulding under the fuzzy felt surface was cracked on both sides where it had been cut to accept the sun blind. I slit open the fuzzy felt and cyano glued the foam edges back together. I then fitted a plastic furniture foot to the outside edge across the break to act as a reinforcing strap (it has 6mm lugs so drilled both sides to locate firmly) and then cyano glued that as well. Once set I used contact adhesive to reattach the fuzzy felt trim. I left the whole lot overnight in the shed to cure as I didn't want cyano fume stains on the C-post trims or leather. This morning it is set solid so I've riveted the sunblind back in place and put it back in the car. The additional plastic strapping under the trim has now widened the load cover sufficiently to prevent it dropping so that's job done.

Not sure how long it will last before the foam tears again but it gives me time to find a decent spare one to replace it with.

When refitting the sun blind I had to shorten some 3.2mm 'pop' style rivets otherwise they interfere with the cloth of the sun blind when deploying.

Cyano and contact adhesive fumes are dangerous to inhale - if you are using the information in this post to repair your own vehicle please do it in a well ventilated place and use suitable PPE.
