Rav4 Mkii 2000 Grating Noise Under Load

Hi!

New to the forum, just bought a 2wd 2000 3dr Rav4 XA20 with 140k on it for work.

Got a good deal so took a chance on a noise I heard...

No noise when stationary, but when I put it in gear and drive I get a grating noise from behind the dash near the passenger footwell.

The noise is heard under load and when not accelerating but when I lift my foot it is intermittent then back again.

Took it to an exhaust shop just to check manifold but it's all clear. Up on the ramp though I noticed there was oil under the gearbox and from the passenger side draft shaft. Also noticed that the driveshaft didn't meet the box flush all the way round...

Any ideas on what this could be and costs??

Many thanks

It's not unusual to see evidence of oil in the areas mentioned. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by " the driveshaft didn't meet the box flush all the way round". The inner CV joint rarely gives problems - it's a robust part. If it does wear, it will usually make a sizzle type noise under load. Another member recently reported that a difficult to trace vibration at 60MPH was eventually attributed to an inner CV. Obviously needs further investigation but if the CV is worn / damaged it is possible to get it reconditioned - you'll probably be startled by the price of a new joint. If the joint is removed, then it's very little more work to replace the weeping oil seal where the joint enters the transmission.

Thanks for the help, I know it's difficult to diagnose without hearing first hand.

Turns out that the gearbox is shot, differential bearing I'm told.

It's a 2000 Mk2 NV 2WD and I'm wondering does any other Toyota box fit i.e. Celica?

It's the 1.8 VVTi petrol 5 speed...

Thanks

Why not just replace the faulty diff bearing?
