Disable Reverse Beeper For Aftermarket Parking Sensors (2001 Rav4J)?

Hello,

I'd like to have aftermarket parking sensors and camera installed for a 2001 RAV4J.

Installing the sensors and camera should be fine (fingers crossed), but disabling

the default reverse beeper seems to be hard.

The garage said that blindly disabling the beeper will also disable the warnings for lights

and aircon remaining on, which I'd like to keep. So is there a way to disable only the

beeper for the reverse gear?

Furthermore, it seems to me that when aircon is on, lights are on, etc. the key will not

come out of the ignition. Is this mechanism independent of the beeper, so if the beeper

is cut off, will the key still be kept in the ignition?

Presumably this Rav has an auto gearbox? Is it a Jap import? Some models have a shift lock amplifier which controls key removal, reverse bleeper and the shift lock button. You can't simply disconnect the amplifier.

Yes, it is a Jap import with auto gearbox. Is there an easy way of detecting

the presence of a shift lock amplifier?

How have other people who installed rear parking sensors dealt with this issue?

If it's a Jap import, it will have a shift lock amplifier usually with the reverse bleeper built in. The system operates by detecting the gearbox selector lever position via a switch. Unfortunately you can't disconnect at the switch otherwise your reverse lights wont work!. First thing is to find the amplifier, I don't know the position on your model Rav but it's usually just under the centre dash - trace it using the bleep. Find the appropriate feed terminal in the connector using a test lamp or meter whilst moving in and out of R. Cut the wire going to this terminal. On some imports like Nissans, owners often bridge the complete amplifier because they're overkill and expensive / troublesome when they go wrong.

Good info, thank you!

The beeper is the single most annoying feature in

an otherwise fine car.
