Hi All.

Can somebody please answer a question?

Re my Cambelt /Waterpump change. The mobile mechanic was due yesterday morning 21st June but by 2pm he still hadn"t turned up so I emailed him.

"I"m not coming" he replied "I can"t do it. I don"t know how to!" I won"t go in to all the details, bar to say I wasn"t at all pleased. So now I have a brand new Cambelt Kit/Waterpump still in the boxes.

My question is: Later I contacted a local one-man-band garage and on giving him the registartion number for my Rav he told me that the book states 3 hours labour for a Non Aircon engine, but 4 hours for an Aircon engine. Is this correct?

My RAV is a 1998 3 door, 2L petrol engine, manual with Aircon.

In the past I did all jobs like this myself, but now aged 72 I don"t know if I am capable of scrabbling underneath the engine.

I don"t suppose there"s anyone living near me (Lymington. New Forest) who would come and do the work for me at an agreed price? Anyone interested?

Cheers all.

Thanks Raistlin, will give them a ring tomorrow. Would you know if it does take longer to change the cambelt on a Rav with Aircon, and if so why does it?

Cheers

There's virtually no difference with or without aircon. The auxiliary belt is tensioned at the alternator in both cases and the aircon compressor doesn't really get in the way. However doing the job in a garage with a lift is better and a lot quicker than a mobile mechanic scrambling around under the wheel-arch on his knees! The really awkward element is that the ABS pump is bolted to the inner wing and hinders removing the top engine mount. It's just about possible to move the pump sufficiently to one-side without disconnecting any fluid lines.
