Dashboard Rattle

hi everyone,

just acquired a 2011 Auris 1.33 TR. Its a great car, but sometimes (especially if car was in a cool place), the dashboard starts to rattle. The rattle is on the left side of the gearknob. In fact if I put my hand there to hold it, it stops rattling. This rattle is really annoying, especially since the car is really silent....and no turning up the volume doesnt make the rattle go away. Anyone know how I can go about fixing this?

Also, on a side note, the rear parcel shelf rattles as well? Anyone know a quick fix for this?

Thanks

Ah. Rattles. Over time tiny gaps open up between panels and vibrations cause them to make intermittent contact, resulting in an annoying rattle. They never used to be a problem, normal cars used to be so noisy that you couldn't detect a rattle.

I've had hours of fun trying to locate the source of rattles. Most times people don't bother, preferring a blanket approach. The usual method of stopping them is to strip the entire area down and put bits of felt or rubber (sticky on one side) between any surfaces that are in contact. If you don't fancy doing that, you can try squeezing bits of felt between panels that you can see without stripping it down, that can help to locate the source and, if you're lucky, resolve the problem.

I've had two Auris - 2009 and 2012 - and not experienced rattling in either so far. I would be surprised if it is actually the parcel shelf rattling - I'd be inclined to check that the spare wheel and the tools are properly secure as a first step.

As regards the centre console - have a look at the following extract from an old topic:

"Inside centre console sounds like a squeak/creak
Fix: under the front passenger footwell below the dash is a plastic cover clip it back on."
