Mr2 Bogging Once In A While

Hi, Bought this MR2 4 days ago from a friend. Works great when i want to get up and go, but when I'm just cruising along maintaining throttle for a bit, it will start to bog down a bit and then when trying to accelerate it bogs down more, each time it happens i push clutch in and rev it to 5,000rpm and afterwards it works fine with no bogging down. i've been told it could be the mass air flow is dirty and to clean it with brake cleaner. just wondering if anyone else has/had this issue and if this is the correct approach i should take.
