lol I wonder if it was something to do with the inverters? Reports on Priuschat are that many owners are suffering failure and delays for replacements are now into 4-6 weeks!

Are the production lines churning out inverters to keep up with demand?

But the articles about the new Prius delays indicate that they're making parts, smaller, lighter and more efficient. Which is exactly what they said about the gen3 and look what happened there! The gen2 is still the best of the three versions.

They don't delay a launch for nothing, something is not quite right here! but we will never know why.

Inverter issues with the gen3, even after the recall.

Gen 4 delayed by 6 months and the new PIP pushed way back.

Toyota UK have reduced the warranty for hybrid components to 5 years from 8 (for the customers benefit of course)

The article says the believe is that it's related to body and chassis issue.

Who knows, maybe the lighter construction does not pass the safety tests (NCAP).

Hiya Peeps

Not instilling much confidence in me, i'm never buying a new model now, unless i'm confident they have ironed out most of the issues. On that note do you think the new cars off the production line are all up to date with the latest recalls?

Yes. In the UK the VOSA code of practice does not allow dealers to sell a new or used car with an outstanding recall

The new Prius is 18 months from launch, it is no surprise to me that the launch has been moved. Launch dates are not set in stone, they can move for any number of reasons

Perhaps Toyota have realised they need to up the game with the number of alternatives available steadily increasing. I'm quite taken with both the Golf GTE and the Audi A3 e-tron(?) and not THAT much more expensive...

Personally I'm hoping in a couple of years Teslas are competitively priced!

Toyota has a substantial shareholding in Tesla, has provided development funding to Tesla, and used what is effectively a Tesla powertrain for the Rav 4 EV produced for the US. Tesla also bought the ex GM/Toyota manufacturing plant from Toyota.

Not sure that around 2.5% is a 'substantial shareholding' (although I wouldn't mind it personally!) and as Toyota are now going down the 'Hydrogen' route (link here to Forbes article) I think there's going to be less 'love' in the future.

I'd by a Tesla Model S tomorrow if finances and availability allowed ;-)

I think it's a good idea to steer well clear of a new model for up to a year, let someone else do the beta testing before you part with your hard earned cash.

The Model S has been out since 2012 in the US so I wouldn't be worrying about that....just the lack of cash!

Tesla model E in a couple of years is pricepointed around $30k, so will be interesting to see the compromises they have to make.

Maybe they've found out that making it lighter makes it noisier on the road.

Haven't the US changed their crash test recently to include an off side glance at the front. Apparently it's very strict and causing some cars to pass fine, but others to fail miserably, but that all cars came out with flying colours on the older test.

I wonder if the gen4 was designed to pass on the old system as isn't so good on the new? With the US as the main export market, they need to make sure it's upto spec.

I would have thought that plug in would be standard on the next Prius. With the Auris Hybrid tourer Prius sales have essentially stopped in Finland. Those few that buy Prius will get either the plug in model or Prius Plus. But Auris Hybrid sales have been many time higher since the new model came.

You might be right. I have wondered if the Prius will be 'plug in' only for the gen4, to make it Toyota's most fuel efficient car. The cost of the small 5 kwh Battery in the PIP will have come down significantly for Toyota to do this, perhaps with higher capacity batteries as options? The 24 kwh Battery in the Leaf is suggested to cost £4,000, so a 5 kwh Battery should be cheap in comparison.

And then Toyota will use traditional hybrids in the rest of the range. This way they stay one step ahead of the competition.
