Front Discs And Pads Need Doing - Advice Sought

Hi folks,

I'm going to replace my front discs and pads in the next month, question is are there any makes of disc and pad to avoid, is it best to stay with solid vented discs or go with the cross drilled / slotted type. My driving is fairly normal on road with mileage around 3k per annum.

There seem to be some good deals on the net with people like camskill and japanese4x4parts, seems I can fit a std set for between £75- £90.

Any thoughts ( other than go to MD and let them fit OEM parts obviously )

I'll be doing it myself, I've done them on other cars and the Rav looks fairly straight forward.

Cheers,

Norm

There's a comprehensive job method in the pinned technical section. It's a personal thing but for normal motoring - plain vented discs are fine. Buy a good branded set - there are loads of unbranded / unknown brands around - Mintex Brakebox are excellent and good value - £61 delivered for discs and pads

As well as normal tools - you'll need two 8mm bolts to remove the discs and a tube of Ceratec brake grease (better than copper grease).

Take a look at MTEC discs and pads. I've used drilled and groved on 3 different cars with no problem. Also look at ECP site and there sister company cheapcarparts! Type in Saveme75 on check out for discount.

A word about Rav brake pads...............4.1 and 4.3 front pads are symmetrical and will fit either way, if wear indicators are fitted, these pads should be on the inside. 4.2 pads are not symmetrical and are intended to be fitted one way so check carefully when you remove the old pads. It's not unknown for owners to return them because they don't fit or to force / file them to get them in the calliper the wrong way around!

Thanks Guys,

Good tips there just what I was after, will probably go with the plain vented style. Nice tip on the pads Gjnorthall ! Will watch out for that one. Might also check out what my local Euro car parts have on offer as well.

good tip is to take pics before you start to dismantle things.

just in case you forget which way around things were.
