What's Covered In The Toyota 3 Month Used Car Warranty?

Hello All,

I'm new to Toyota Owners Club Forum so excuse me if I have posted this thread to the wrong Forum.

My wife recently traded in her 2003 3-door petrol RAV NRG for a 2006 5-door diesel XT4 with a local Toyota Main Dealer. As part of the deal we got a 3 month warranty.

Yesterday, after only a couple of weeks of ownership, her car lost power in pretty much all gears but she was able to limp it back to the Main Dealer with black smoke spewing from the exhaust.

Speaking with the Main Dealer they have told me that they have cleaned the EGR valve and will be replacing one of the injectors; they have not been able to explain why there has been a significant loss of oil.

I've been reading through the warranty but am not totally sure which items, listed above, will be covered. Has anyone experienced anything similar and is so what was covered?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Marcellus - welcome to Toyota Owners Club.

Not aware that Toyota provide a three month used car warranty - they provide a 1 year warranty under their Approved Used programme.

Are you sure it isn't the dealer's warranty?

There have been head gasket issues with the 1AD and 2AD diesel engines - yours is a 2AD - and Toyota offered a goodwill warranty extension on affected engines up to the time the vehicle reached either 7 years of age or 111,000 miles, whichever occurred first. See: http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/132178-charliefarlies-guide-to-the-toyota-2ad-diesel-engine-and-its-issues/

The dealer should be able to check as to whether your car has already had a replacement engine under the goodwill warranty. However, as yours is a 2006 vehicle it will now be outside the goodwill warranty extension.

I would think discussions are needed between yourself and the dealer as to whether the problems you've had are to do with head gasket failure, and whether their warranty covers repairs. Failing that, you may wish to look at the Sales of Goods Act 1979.

Just be aware that the contract of sale is between you and the retailer, not Toyota.

Hello Mike,

Thanks for the quick reply.

After checking with Toyota themselves they have confirmed that the 3 month warranty is an extension to Toyota's own. Speaking with the delaer they have assured me the work should be covered so I have asked for the DPF to be replaced as well.

Your mention of head gasket got me worried so I phoned Toyota Customer Realtions who checked the reg number against their system and say that there are no outstanding recalls.

I have started a log just in case things do go awry with the dealer but so far so good.

Just have to see how this one falls.

Thanks for the advice.

You cannot be sold a car without at least a 3 month warranty so everything within reason will have to be covered, certainly mechanical parts would be covered, but for complete clarity, you need to check this out with the seller

Okay so the Dealer has finally reached, after 4 days of working on the car, the conclusion detailed in your posting Mike; a top half engine rebuild. They are "in conversation" with Sales and Toyota themselves as to who will be picking up the costs as my wife has owned the car for less than two weeks when it has been drivable.

A courtesy car awaits and hopefully an end to the issues. Having read a few other threads an engine rebuild doesn't always guarantee a resolution to the issue. Only time will tell I guess.

Thanks again.
