Noise Under Hard Revving

55 plate 2.2 D4D makes a strange rattling noise under hard acceleration or when revving in neutral. Remember years ago when kids used to put cards on their bikes to rattle on the spokes of the wheels, well it sort of sounds like that, and it appears to be coming from the bottom of the engine on the drivers side. It doesn't seem to affect anything it drives and accelerates fine. Any ideas?

Could it be a loose heat shield vibrating on the exhaust?

Have you checked air filter box feeding hose? The tube that directs air to filter box, joint in there is loose and mostly vibrating sounds heard around 1600-2000 rpm, if pushed hard, might occur in this situation too. Piece of foam would solve it.
