Hi hoatran,

I don't think theres really an explaination for why most model names begin with "C". (well not that i know of :P  )

You can say that "S" is common as well with Sera, Soarer, Supra, Starlet...

Kenny!

p.s. welcome to TOC :group-cuddles:

OR "M"s with MR2 .. erm .. MR-S ..

I know Lotus use lots of "E" words as a part of their naming history ..

but WHY are they named in such ways???

what in the world does Yaris or Corolla actually mean.

although as far as im aware MR2 does stand for Midship Roadster 2 seater?

Same with Vaxuall, every car seems to end with an 'A'

Corsa, Astra, Vectra, Mireva, Zafira, Agila, VX220

Oh well never mind...

Toyota used some design team to come up with the name "Yaris". It's a made up name. It means nothing but is supposed to suggest elegance (as in Paris) and a load of other stuff I can't remember! Wish I could find the link for ya.

Some of the names are sourced from all over the world though.

Sera is French for 'Will Be' (as in Que Sera Sera, as it was basically a concept car).

Cynos (sorry Cynos owners) is Greek for Dog. :(

All the model names are derived from Japanese words or phrases which capture the essence of the car:

Avensis = Avmonsi Chu Char (rattles like hell)

Yaris = Yari Tong Wi (no seat adjustment)

Supra = Sup Mon Ra Tung Lee (excessive speed can soil clothing)

Carina = Car Ming Ina Tattoy (destined to be a mini cab)

MR2 actually stands for Mid-engined, Rear wheel drive, 2 seater.

Unfortunately, the Japense language doesn't exactly translate to ours in the literal sense (and vice versa) so as far as they're concerned it's "Midship Runabout."

Oh well never mind...

the vauxhalls are called that because historically Opel has used names ending in "a", such as

Nova, Corsa, Astra, Meriva, Zafira, Sintra, Tigra, Agila, Vectra

The new cars coming through

Signum, Vauxhall Blue, VX Trixx, VX220

are being used to herald a new image and new direction for the company

.............yes i used to work for them

 Isn't Toyota derived from a shortened version of Toyo Kogyo Tatoo NikNak? :saddam:

Up until recently all Toyotas had Italian names with the exception of the MR2. Not sure about the Yaris.

Better than Ford tho, they had a meeting and the chairman said ' This is a focus group to decide upon the names for two new cars. Focus and Ka, right, last one down the pub pays'

Ford have a history of dodgy names though.

Fiesta and Escort were named after Jazz Mags. :D
