Domestic Charging Point - Rules Change

For ages now you have been able to get a free domestic charging point installed, as there was a nationwide grant from the government to cover it.

I was idly thinking about installing one, just in case I end with a plug in at some point.

I notice though that the scheme ended at the end of June. Right this minute there is an interim period with no scheme, and OLEV have asked suppliers take no new orders.

A new scheme starts in September 2014 - with one crucial difference. Under the old scheme you didn't have to have an electric car - under the new you do, or proof you have access to one.

It's also only £900 worth as well now as opposed to £1000, and only covers 75% of the install, not 100%.

I guess these things will only get more expensive as time goes by, and in my case, I've missed the boat here.

I was planning to get one installed for free without owning a rechargeable car yet and had the guy around. In the end I did not go ahead with it. You need to know exactly what type of plug/system you need. You can only get the grant once and if you end up with the wrong type it may cost £600 to get the right unit. At least that's what he told me.

Besides, I wanted to have the 32A version otherwise I could have just used any socket in my garage. This is not covered with the grant but would've costed me only £90.
