Toyota Deal Cars From Stock.

Had a call from the dealer yesterday to say they were doing deals on their current stock of new and used cars. I went in to the dealers this morning and 3 hours later came out having ordered a new Prius T Spirit in blue. I was interested in the PIP deal but a car with no spare wheel was not for me. Dealer said he could get me a spare wheel for a PIP but there is no built in storage space for it. Salesman stated that because I do a very low mileage the PIP was not so good a for me. I tried to get a deal on the Auris Sports Tourer but the best deal was on a new Prius. There are several minor improvements in the new car. I like the electronic folding wing mirrors, the sat nav has been updated to show position of cameras. Auto dimming mirror is good. The 2014 Prius I test drove did not seem a lot different to my current Prius on the road with regard to handling and noise levels. The salesman said there were improvements!!!!

I was diappointed the test car did not have Michelin Tyres, Salesman said they were Toyota Tyres. I hope the new car has Michelin tyres. I think I got a reasonable deal and due to the reported delays in the new model Gen 4 I think this was the best thing to do for an oldie like me. The new car will be registered at the end of July. I will collect it sometime in August. I rejected the gap insurance and the car protection scheme.

I would have thought that low mileage use was ideal for PiP :ermm:

Don't rain on his parade! :)

The PIP is overpriced and if he got a good deal on a new Prii, then that's even better. The new gen4 has been delayed for about a year for the US market and the UK is usually about 3-6 months behind that.

The good thing about a 2014 Prius is that all the little gremlins and issues will have been ironed out of it. I'll think definitely think twice about getting a 'just released' model in future!

Yes in summer maybe, when no heat is required, but in winter the ICE will be running to heat the cabin. On a 3 mile commute like mine it takes that to warm the engine so the EV Battery would hardly ever get used in winter. The PIP would be far more useful if it included a preheat system during mains charging.

It's all relative. I do only about 3,500 miles in a year. In winter the ICE sometimes runs to heat the cabin; in summer it sometimes runs to run the air conditioning, but it still gives me much lower variable costs than my T-Spirit did.

The much bigger problem arises from the fixed costs, which in a low mileage vehicle are spread over fewer miles.

Agreed, but each to their own.

Regarding Toyota tyres must say I have never heard of them. A young traineee salesman made that statement. I did not check the tyres myself as I was not buying that paticular car. Hope my new car comes with Michelins.

Regarding the PIP; the salesman stated the deal on a new prius Gen 4 was the best they could do. I have also stated my main reason for not buying the PIP.

Regardless, the deal is done and I think it was the best I could get from my local dealer. It took almost 3 hours to reach a deal with their experienced salesman and his trainee.

RHD Prius are fitted with either Toyo, Michelin, Bridgestone, Goodyear or Yokohama tyres.

Toyo is a Japanese tyre company founded in 1945 and supplies OE tyres to Toyota, Mazda, etc.

Wasn't trying to rain on his parade ;-)

Regarding the gremlins etc, I actually bought a very late (Dec 2008) 2nd Gen rather than a 2009/2010 3rd Gen because I read that generally the 2nd Gen was better when taking all things into account and that the 3rd Gen had issues the 2nd Gen didn't so I guess it's all swings & roundabouts!

As my previous car and 2 mile commute didn't warm the car up at all I wasn't even thinking about heating up the cabin. Although I thought (excluding this aspect) that the car could move off straight away on EV, my mistake.

This is more what I'd expect.

Thanks Frosty that expains it. The tyres on the demo car must have been Toya.

What's the difference between "electric folding wing mirrors" and "electronic folding mirrors"?

We'd all be interested in the answer to that one!

But back to tyres - when buying a new car is it possible to specify your preferred tyre (eg Michelin etc.)? Would a financial 'adjustment' be required, even if,on a different day, your car could well be supplied with your preferred tyre as standard?

I put wing mirrors in my initial write up. I suppose to be correct I should have put "door mirrors". I am an oldie and on old cars we referred to them as wing mirrors because that is where they were fitted. Does it really matter!!

Check this link out, wing mirror & door mirror are terms used in the same advert: Click link below:

I am told you cannot specify the type of tyres for a new car.

For most models car manufacturers usually source their OE equipment tyres from a couple of tyre manufacturers to ensure continuity of supply, and I would imagine that the tyres fitted during production are those available at the time of fitment.

For example the New Aygo will have either Michelins or Continentals fitted as standard.

Apologies if my question was misinterpreted. I wasn't being facetious, it was to determine the difference between electric and electronic mirrors, to which you had referred.

....The PIP is overpriced ...

Certainly is at full price, especially now the PIP has some serious competition, but at least one member of the Yahoo Prius-uk group got a stonking deal on a PIP almost a year ago, through Drive The Deal. With the Government incentive, a £4k DtD discount, and a £1½k Toyota Loyalty bonus, he got his on the road with metallic paint and protection pack for £23.7k!

I don't think the loyalty bonus is available any more though.

Still overpriced :) Just look at the competition, now and even when it was released.

Toyota UK seem to treat the PIP as a compliance car rather than actively wanting to sell it. Shame that they give that impression considering how they try to push their green credentials.

Hasn't the gen4 prius been delayed?

I think the salesman meant a facelifted gen3.

Camera positions change so not always as useful as it sounds if there not frequent updates.

I will collect it sometime in August. I rejected the gap insurance and the car protection scheme.

When you collect it, you might be offered a special deal on car protection and gap insurance.

I get the impression that there are targets to hit for sales of these items.

Hi Alan, The Gen 4 is reported to be delayed. Our new car is the 2014 gen 3. T Spirit.

Regarding cameras, providing the speed resrictions are clearly marked I just set the cruise control to the restricted speed. So cameras are not a big concern for me.

The dealer did not push me to have gap ins. or car protection. I had them on my last car but not convinced they are worth the money.
