I am looking to increase the power of my yr 2000 1.8 VVTi engine is this possible by change of the engine management chip to either an uprated one or a celica one ? if so are there likely to be side effects?

there are companies who specialise in overwriting the information stored in the computer. you can also get small boxes that plug into the diagnostic port and when you turn the switch the car is fast and when you turn it off the car is normal. with these when you remove the unit no one can tell. ie insurance people etc.
