Here's something I found on the web somewhere - I can't vouch for it's accuracy though

once you have found your 12v+ constant , 12v+ accessories with a test light, and a good earth. (i alway put my own earth to the metal cradle thats in the dash assembly, i never trust a factory earth that much.)

plus i seen too many people mix up the light dimmer wire with a earth.

an easy way to find speakers in a car with-out pulling things apart, is with a little 9 volt battery. you touch the wires on the + and - of the battery and the correct wires for a speaker will emit a static noise. once you have esablished the correct wires for each speaker, you can find out if its the correct polarity by turning the balance to the left or right. (when you have the unit wired and on).

if the speaker sounds more bass on one side (lets say left side) than when in the middle then the speaker if out of phase, you only change the polarity on 1 of the speakers. do the same for the rear set if you have em.

most toyota cars use the same basic colour codes for there stereo's:

12v+ constant = blue/white stripe

12v+ accessories = grey

earth = brown

light dimmer = brown/red stripe

front right spkr + = light green

front right spkr - =blue

front left spkr + =pink

front left spkr - =violet

rear right spkr + =red

rear right spkr - =white

rear left spkr + =black

rear left spkr - =yellow
