R12 To R134A Ac Conversion

had my old 92 surf a week now and all ok apart from the !Removed! ac not working.after asking about and going oline for a bit of research here is what i understand about older ac systems.they run on r12 gas untill 94 this was deemed bad for the ozone layer so swapped to the more friendly r134a gas.so how do i re gas my old 92 surf,looks like the answer is you cant unless you convert to the newer gas ,this means changing the ports on the compressor and removing all traces of r12 from system,also the seals may need replacing as the newer gas can leak through,also if your ac doesnt work you will probabaly have a leak anyway in the system to sort out....phew!i rang a specialist ac engineering place in hull and the said they cant remove old r12 because it will contaminate the newer r134a stored in storage vessel.,so has anyone had this converion or know who does it?i get the feeling it wont be worth the cost as the hilux is so old ,anyone help me keep coo?,marko

How about you find a newer AC system for a later Surf and swap it over, I've never had a problem re-gassing my 94 surf

thanks for reply.i think the main problem is removing the old gas.you can buy port conversion kits to convert the ports on the compressor so the newer gas bottle connections fit,nobody seems to want to remove old traces of r12 gas in the system,yours will be r134a gas you can tell by looking at the filling ports on the compressor,r12 are a bit like car tyre valves,r134a dont have threads on the outside and are recessed,cheers marko

If the AC isn't working, it is probably due to the system having no refrigerant, (system wont work if it has no refrigerant) so their is no refrigerant to recover.

Good morning, you can recover the old refrigerant by a recovery unit even with car ac not working. You store the old refregerant in a appropriate container and discard it. The seals used for R12 are the same for R134a. In other words the R134a is alternatine to R12. You have to change the two service valves, the filter-collector unit (the pressure switch is the same) and the expansion valve on the evaporator unit. If you have any other questions dont hesitate to ask.
