Protection Packages

Hi all. If you've noticed in some of my other posts, I just bought a 2004 Camry SE. The guy at the dealership is trying to sell me extra protection and coverage for my new car. The Consumer's Report magazine says that extra protection coverage and automotive protection packages are just money grabs for the dealers. Does anyone have any good/bad experiences with buying extra protection?

I live in Manitoba, Canada, where we use a lot of salt in the winter time. I'm considering getting the rust protection package, but aren't cars nowadays made with double sided galvanized steel that reduces rust anyways? The dealer argued that the majority of cars are driven in California so the Consumers Report is going to be more directed at those drivers. Obviously, salt on the roads is not an issue in California so naturally CR would say that such extra packages are a money grab. Is there anyone out there from Manitoba/Ontario/Quebec who has not purchased the rust protection for a new car and found rust problems already?
