2003 2.0 Avensis D4D Grinding/ Rubbing Noise

Hi there, I'm new to the forum and would like some advice and peoples opinions.

I have had my car for 2 years and it's a motorway cruiser and never given me any issues apart from the usual wear and tear and servicing. But for a while now, it has developed this grinding/ rubbing sound from beneath the car ( sounds like near the driver side) and will not go over 40mph. I have to get the car into fourth gear usually for it to get up to this speed and there's seems to be a burning smell coming when I'm driving too.

I took it to the garage and replaced the bushes, but I just don't know what it is, makes a constant rubbing sound, when started it's ok for the first gee mins but then it settles in and drives real bad, steering everything.

It's done 163,000 and I'm taking it to the garage tomorrow, but if you guys could help me out, I would really appreciate it..
