Apologies if this one has been beaten to death before, but i ran a quick site search and didn't find anything, possibly I'm using the wrong keywords.

My Auris got its last "in warranty" main dealer service today, and I plan on doing the next ones myself. My last Corolla didnt have any service warning lights to reset, but this one does.

I was wondering what do people recommend for DIY guys to buy to investigate engine codes through the computer dianostics and for resetting conditions etc?

I'm not going to be doing this in the trade, at most, I'll use it on my own and possibly my father's low mileage avensis. I don't need to be getting too deep into it, a sofware and cable rig might be the best.

Anyone any thoughts and advice on what I should be lining up for 15 weeks time?

Try doing a search for 'obd cable' or similar (obd - onboard diagnostics).

There is a way to reset the service interval light and also ways to reset other systems without obd connection ... I don't know if an obd would be worth it for now

I use a bluetooth obd adapter and my android phone for diagnostics. Using an app called torque/torque pro. It's available for iPhone as well. Works brilliantly and tells you all information you could ask for.

Well, doing a search for ODB did turn up a lot of results, including a $25 bluetooth device that can connect to pc or android / iphones. I appreciate that there are other way to clear service lights, like disconnecting the Battery etc, but I also believe in the right to repair, and $25 is a small price to pay to uphold that right. Thanks for all your input.

Much cheaper, and the torque app is a couple of pound on the android market.

The torque app is good, but it thoes not provide all. There are cables to be used with the techstream software at a price as low as 30 pounds. I even have that for 20 pound incl transport costs. But there is a little bit of play with the installation of software. Nothign too scary as there are a lot of guides on the internet. The bluetooth device is a e good one but I'm not 100% sure if you can clear the service lights with the torque app. You should check that with the developers there, they should tell you that. The above process for the Auris is detailed in the owner's manual, and I would imagine the same is true for the Yaris.
