My old Avensis is coming to the end of its life and I am considering downsizing to a diesel Yaris. Can anybody tell me the significance of "MMT" I see in the car description? :bored: Cheers.

MMT is Toyota's Multi Mode Transmission - which is an automated manual gearbox. Whilst some other manufacturers offer something similar - they can all be troublesome and expensive to repair. See Honest John's review of the second generation Yaris (Good/Bad) - http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/toyota/yaris-2006/?section=good

Just read "Honest Johns" report. WOW :Jumpy: Think I need to re-assess the MMT version and go for the manual. Thanks for your help.

I was in a similar situation just 5 months ago. Looking for a yaris for the wife, saw adverts with MMT, looked on a couple forums and read that it was not so "popular", decided against it. Wife got a 58 plate diesel Yaris with manual gearbox, then 3 months ago I bought a 59 plate Yaris diesel again with manual box but this time a 6 gear. Really nice car to drive. Getting just over 62mpg in mine, wife just a bit less probably due to her 5 speed gearbox although she does more M-Way miles then me. The diesel engine, even though it is 1354cc, has plenty of torque and I have read has the best 0-60 time of the 1.0/1.3 petrol engines and the 1.4 diesel.and

'MMT' means to a owner, trouble, to a prospective buyer, walk on by, to a repair shop, happy days are here again!

Toyota are as guilty as all the other manufacturers, they all rushed into the 'automated manual' market and all caught a crab with 'em, though many service departments of main dealers must now see 'em as 'bread & butter'.

Some years ago, I took a test drive in both, the Yaris and the Jazz automated manuals, how the salesman in both managed to keep up the 'patter', I don't know. I do recall the Honda guy suggesting that I'd have to alter my 'driving 'style' to get the best from the car...........

Look around any scrap yard and you'll see many a fairly late model, seemingly OK small cars, most, if not all, will have been fitted with automated manual boxes that the owners have found too expensive to repair, Vauxhall's Corsa especially.

Thanks for the warning everybody. Think I will give MMT a wide berth.

You have done the best thing to research and ask questions about a possible new car. Most of these MMT or computerised semi autos seem to be a lot trouble.

Small diesels can have issues too. I hope you have read them. Things like dual mass flywheel (DMF) and diesel particulate filters (DPF).

The DPFs are worse because lots short, stop start journeys, plus lack of high speed continuous journeys needed to do the 'burn' cycle will cause the EML to come on. Sometimes depending on the model, the cars enter limp mode or the ESP, ABS lights come on too.

I hope you find the right car for you.

Good luck.

Konrad C

I dont think dual mass flywheels and their problems are restricted to "small diesels"

My 2 previous cars, BMW 320D and Vauxhall Vextra 1.9CDti, both had DMF's and their respective forums show many forum members had problems with them.

And as for DPF's - just buy a low mileage Yaris diesel with low miles for the year.

It appears early 59 plate Yaris diesels did not have DPF, so I have been fortunate because I bought my Yaris diesel whilst I was ignorant of these things.
